Improvements along a 2km section of the Spen Valley Greenway in West Yorkshire include a smoother surface, wider path and better access, as well as new lighting.

The improvements are already having a positive effect on it's regular users, as mum Georgina shares 😀

It costs on average around £2.48 to maintain a metre of the Network every year. This includes repairing surfaces, managing vegetation growth and keeping drains and ditches free and flowing.

Satwant uses the National Cycle Network to lead group rides for his cycling group. He describes his local routes as ‘magic’ and truly believes that the Network has helped his cycling group to thrive.

But these beautiful paths require constant care and costly maintenance.

“I use my trike to go shopping. I’ve got a local supermarket I can cycle to. The Gloucester part of National Cycle Route 41 it is actually really lovely because it comes up the canal and then it cuts through Gloucester around the cathedral.

Debbie Cooper Jones started riding a recumbent trike, which places the rider in a laid back, reclined position, five years ago after health conditions Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and dyspraxia meant she was no longer able to ride a bicycle.
