1922 Indianapolis 500 Thread #Indy500 🧵

In May 1922 my grandfather accompanied his friend and race driver Ralph Mulford to the Indy 500 where Mulford raced. Mulford had to drop out at lap 150, while he was in 3rd place, due to a broken valve.

Dot com companies all denied a forthcoming bubble, then the industry collapsed in early 2000, and with it thousands of companies, over 50% of the industry then.

Roedelius archive recordings ‘90.’ These 4 discs are really wonderful.

Long before his terrible comments on race, I worked with Dr Watson on some buildings at CSHL. He had a tremendous sense of curiosity, and he surrounded himself with very smart hard working researchers. It’s criminal that Rosalind Franklin never got her due. This article is a great piece.

We had a hard freeze a few days ago. I was able to rescue a big batch of nasturtium seeds for next Spring. Remarkably, we had a warm day yesterday, and the surviving nasturtium flowers were still being visited by honey bees.

And just like that we've gone from a killing frost (decimating the garden and flowers) to mid 60s F. I had to change out of my felt lined shirt and pants. It's like late Spring outside.

Crazy!

Remember the dot com bubble?

I do.

This AI BS is vaporware: Uses unbelievable amounts of electricity and yields unpredictable and dangerous results.

All I ever want to do with current software is turn that AI crap off.

Think people, don't let computers think for you.
ICYMI: Microsoft’s charge “implies a more than $12 billion quarterly loss at OpenAI, said Firoz Valliji, an analyst at Bernstein.”

That “would mark one of the largest single-quarter losses for a tech company in history.”

Hello friends,

Here's a little video I put together a few years ago, in the glen of northern Pennsylvania, where there are countless waterfalls. I did the music in my little studio with analog machines.

The AI bubble is gonna burst and it isn’t going to be pretty for those taken in by it—same with crypto. Meanwhile, regular electric customers will get screwed too.

He was wandering aimlessly in Japan. Shitler is losing his shit.
The president had a MRI but won't say why.

He had bruises on his hands but wouldn't say why.

He just had an 'annual medical' even though he already had his annual medical.

He got shot in the ear but has never released the medical records relating to it.

How is any of this ok?

@darthbluesky.bsky.social Saturn has a potato!
Every time I see this image i just gawp at it. An icy space potato whose gravity shepherds the tiny particles in Saturn's F Ring and you can see its shadow, cast by a sun a billion kilometers away.

Nothing has changed since the days of The Great War and Siegfried Sassoon.
Fentanyl and coke are the new “weapons of mass destruction” lie. It’s Iraq all over again, folks. It’s always about controlling the oil.

We saw a great concert last night with the @stevehacketthq.bsky.social band, playing new solo work, some favorites from the 1970s and 80s, highlights from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and something special from Foxtrot.

What was that I said about Bari Weiss having less “journalism” integrity than would fit in a dollhouse thimble?
Auspicious start for the new CBS News, laundering unattributed cop shit-talking through the incoming editor-in-chief’s blog and failing to correct a misspelling of the story subject’s name in the web headline for three days.
October 13, 2025 at 8:35 PM
Bari Weiss is a right wing propaganda shill. Edward R Morrow and Walter Cronkite are rolling over in their graves. Bari's integrity and "journalism" cred wouldn't fill a dollhouse thimble.
Ratio me. Please. It's a badge of honor. If you don't like a link, go follow some chicken-heart who needs the approval of the thought-police. Caitlin Flanagan of @theatlantic.com is a tremendous writer and this piece is an excellent read. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Gold is now at $4,088 an ounce.

Something is seriously wrong with the foundation of the US economy that so many investors are running to gold as a hedge.

Gold was $250 an ounce in 2000.

I’ve listened to Nick Drake since early 1970s, probably have most of his recordings, even some of his mother Molly’s songs. When I heard this collection of pre-Five Leaves demos and archival history was coming, it was an instant purchase. The interviews about this collection sounded fascinating.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, US Gold is up to almost $3,900 and ounce. This (like other things) isn't normal.
