Waiting for Berkman

Houston Astros baseball and baseball generally.

Not Lance Berkman, but waiting for him.

“A baseball game is nothing but a great slow contraption for getting you to pay attention to the cadence of a summer day.” - Michael Chabon, Summerland
AJ Hinch went from the toxic #Astros environment to the toxic #Tigers environment. He really knows how to pick 'em!

On the left: Nate Cavanagh, a 28-year-old DOGE staffer and college dropout.

On the right: Mohammad Halimi, a 53-year-old exiled Afghan scholar.

This is the story of how DOGE targeted Halimi on social media.

Then the Taliban took his family. 🧵

Few phrases inspire joy and wonder like those invoked last night by the #Astros: walk-off fielder’s choice

I am "I don't know how people put all these video clips on BlueSky" years old.

Strong #Astros analysis here...

One guess into today's Immaculate Grid and I was broken. Didn't even try another.

Signing old first basemen has not been the panacea one might have hoped these last few years. #Astros

Anecdotal, but it seems like bunting has returned to baseball.

I'm no realtor, but it's not hard to imagine that, in the USA, 10,000 real estate projects get sabotaged in various ways every day.

Carlos Correa is such a presence in the #Astros dugout. He and Altuve perch atop the dugout watching everything. Correa boosted Chas after his home run more than anyone. Correa joins the pitcher and catcher for strategy talk after throw-downs.

Another Astros starter has added a sinker. Cristian Javier threw 12 of them today, according to Baseball Savant. Javier said he developed it while working with Eric Cressey at his performance facility in Palm Beach Gardens and Astros coaches at the complex in West Palm Beach

Despite an up and down game last night (I blame the bullpen), the #Astros vibe is strong right now. The playoff hunt is on.

I mean, what a sentence!:

"So, in order to hit every incentive in his new contract, Anthony would have to become, without exaggeration, the best baseball player ever."

My 10-year-old is at the point where he wants to know which #Astros broadcaster is which. I turned on 790 in the car. "This is Robert Ford, right?" That's right, son. That's right. #parenting

It's been what, 15 years since starting pitchers went super deep into games? Yet, broadcasters still talk about the 100 pitch cap as if it snuck up on them.

I love Jesus Sanchez's swing. #Astros

Fun when you learn a keyboard shortcut that reveals that you've wasted a couple ten hours of your life with unnecessary clicking and dragging.

Is it wrong to be so happy that Correa hit a bomb when the game went so poorly?

This trend of thanking relatively anonymous middle relievers for their service when they get traded. I'm no Ty Cobb originalist but this feels like a bit much.

When you get to tell the 10yo and 13yo that Correa is back with the #Astros... good times

A big take away from the trade deadline: there sure are a bunch of hard-working effective relief pitchers out there who have completely escaped my general awareness.
