Despite the severe local impact and Vermont’s clear eligibility for federal aid, Governor Phil Scott said he does not plan to appeal the president’s denial.

Without federal disaster assistance, towns will be left to shoulder the costs on their own — a burden many cannot afford. Because of Donald Trump, they are now facing the prospect of borrowing just to repair basic infrastructure.

While Trump approved disaster declarations for Republican-led states including Alaska, Nebraska, and North Dakota, Vermont’s request was denied without explanation. FEMA officials confirmed that Vermont met the threshold for damages, but the final decision was made at the president’s discretion.

The decision — which came more than nine weeks after Vermont submitted its request — leaves already-strained small towns facing millions of dollars in repair costs with no federal relief in sight.

Senator Peter Welch said, “The Keep SNAP Funded Act is a commonsense, bipartisan bill. I urge Senate leadership to bring this bill to the floor... If the Trump Administration refuses to use the money it has to fund the program during this shutdown, Congress must step in.”
