In a major victory for Vermont, Senator Peter Welch’s Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act has passed the Senate.

This bill expands milk options with school lunches, strengthening child nutrition standards & providing meaningful support for dairy farmers when the industry faces real pressure.

Today, we honor our nation’s veterans and thank them for their courageous service. Vermont Democrats are committed to building a state that serves our veterans and their families in return.

This was a political decision from Donald Trump and our governor is choosing not to fight back. Towns in the Northeast Kingdom can’t afford to rebuild alone.
November 7, 2025 at 12:18 AM
Despite the severe local impact and Vermont’s clear eligibility for federal aid, Governor Phil Scott said he does not plan to appeal the president’s denial.
November 7, 2025 at 12:18 AM
Without federal disaster assistance, towns will be left to shoulder the costs on their own — a burden many cannot afford. Because of Donald Trump, they are now facing the prospect of borrowing just to repair basic infrastructure.
November 7, 2025 at 12:18 AM
While Trump approved disaster declarations for Republican-led states including Alaska, Nebraska, and North Dakota, Vermont’s request was denied without explanation. FEMA officials confirmed that Vermont met the threshold for damages, but the final decision was made at the president’s discretion.
November 7, 2025 at 12:18 AM
The decision — which came more than nine weeks after Vermont submitted its request — leaves already-strained small towns facing millions of dollars in repair costs with no federal relief in sight.
November 7, 2025 at 12:18 AM
President Trump has denied Vermont’s request for a major disaster declaration following the devastating July floods that destroyed roads, bridges, and vital infrastructure across the Northeast Kingdom and other regions.

U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch cosponsored the Keep SNAP Funded Act of 2025, a bipartisan bill which would protect millions of Americans from losing access to programs that help people put food on the table.
November 3, 2025 at 2:18 PM
About 65,000 Vermonters rely on 3SquaresVT each month — support that keeps food on tables and our local economy moving. Every delay means skipped meals, overwhelmed food banks, and lost income for grocers and farms. We’re fighting to protect Vermont families.
October 30, 2025 at 4:39 PM
Trump is making a deliberate, illegal, and inhumane choice not to fund food assistance for millions of Americans. Vermont AG Charity Clark is fighting back. No one should go hungry when Congress already set aside funds to keep SNAP running.

Leaders in the Vermont Legislature will fully fund SNAP (3SquaresVT) and LIHEAP to protect Vermonters from the fallout of the Republican-led government shutdown.

This weekend, we headed to Maine to knock doors, raise funds, and fight hard against Maine Question 1 — a ballot measure that would dismantle Maine’s absentee voting system.

In the face of Donald Trump’s lawless presidency, Phil Scott has abdicated his responsibility to stand up for Vermonters. The governor now defaults to compliance instead of conviction in the face of MAGA extremism. Vermonters deserve better from Phil Scott.
October 23, 2025 at 2:46 PM
Compliance without question is complicity. The Trump administration is pursuing a broad surveillance agenda. Phil Scott’s cooperation has made Vermont part of it.
October 23, 2025 at 2:46 PM
Governor Scott chose to obey in advance rather than push back against illegal federal overreach. We’ve seen that when states fight back, they can win.
October 23, 2025 at 2:46 PM
Governor Phil Scott blocked Attorney General Charity Clark and the state of Vermont from joining the lawsuit that protected 21 other states and the District of Columbia. Now legal experts warn Vermont may have even violated the law by disclosing this information to Donald Trump.
October 23, 2025 at 2:46 PM
A judge just ruled Trump’s demand for states’ SNAP data was illegal. But Governor Phil Scott already handed over the personal info of 140,000 Vermonters.
October 23, 2025 at 2:46 PM
The reality is, if Phil Scott gets his way, 45,000 Vermonters will lose their health care and every one of us will feel the hurt caused to our precarious health care system.
October 20, 2025 at 2:52 PM
His own Agency of Human Services says the loss of these tax credits will lead to some 15,000 Vermonters losing their health care. Scott’s explanation also ignores 30,000 Vermonters whose Medicaid coverage Democrats are fighting to restore.
October 20, 2025 at 2:52 PM
A “clean” bill would only extend current baseline spending, without reauthorizing those critical tax credits. Republicans in Washington are pushing a bill that slashes funding for Medicaid and Medicare and raids health care dollars to pay for more tax cuts for the wealthy.
October 20, 2025 at 2:52 PM
He called for a so-called “clean” continuing resolution — a position that the Trump administration immediately embraced and continues to cite as evidence of support for their agenda. If that is not what he believes, he should clarify that directly with the White House.
October 20, 2025 at 2:52 PM
We’re glad to see that Governor Scott has now joined Senator Sanders, Senator Welch, and Congresswoman Balint in recognizing the importance of extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits for Vermonters. But let’s be clear: this was not his original stance.
