This was a political decision from Donald Trump and our governor is choosing not to fight back. Towns in the Northeast Kingdom can’t afford to rebuild alone.

Despite the severe local impact and Vermont’s clear eligibility for federal aid, Governor Phil Scott said he does not plan to appeal the president’s denial.

Without federal disaster assistance, towns will be left to shoulder the costs on their own — a burden many cannot afford. Because of Donald Trump, they are now facing the prospect of borrowing just to repair basic infrastructure.

While Trump approved disaster declarations for Republican-led states including Alaska, Nebraska, and North Dakota, Vermont’s request was denied without explanation. FEMA officials confirmed that Vermont met the threshold for damages, but the final decision was made at the president’s discretion.

Compliance without question is complicity. The Trump administration is pursuing a broad surveillance agenda. Phil Scott’s cooperation has made Vermont part of it.

Governor Phil Scott blocked Attorney General Charity Clark and the state of Vermont from joining the lawsuit that protected 21 other states and the District of Columbia. Now legal experts warn Vermont may have even violated the law by disclosing this information to Donald Trump.

The reality is, if Phil Scott gets his way, 45,000 Vermonters will lose their health care and every one of us will feel the hurt caused to our precarious health care system.

His own Agency of Human Services says the loss of these tax credits will lead to some 15,000 Vermonters losing their health care. Scott’s explanation also ignores 30,000 Vermonters whose Medicaid coverage Democrats are fighting to restore.

A “clean” bill would only extend current baseline spending, without reauthorizing those critical tax credits. Republicans in Washington are pushing a bill that slashes funding for Medicaid and Medicare and raids health care dollars to pay for more tax cuts for the wealthy.

He called for a so-called “clean” continuing resolution — a position that the Trump administration immediately embraced and continues to cite as evidence of support for their agenda. If that is not what he believes, he should clarify that directly with the White House.

We’re glad to see that Governor Scott has now joined Senator Sanders, Senator Welch, and Congresswoman Balint in recognizing the importance of extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits for Vermonters. But let’s be clear: this was not his original stance.
