Until the richest countries commit to ending fossil fuel production + use and deliver adequate climate finance on fair terms, global calls for fossil fuel phaseout will ring hollow to countries that are struggling to meet development, energy access, and climate resilience needs.

While the IEA and IMF issue reports touting the climate-saving potential of AI, here is an example of the real-life, present-day impacts of AI on the climate and public health.
NEW from me: Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company is operating 35 gas turbines without any pollution permits, belching asthma-worsening emissions into an area that leads Tennessee in ER visits for asthma.

The work equivalent is using AI to write reports based on bullet points which someone else will then use AI to get a bullet point summary of, both because you’re ‘too busy’ to do the writing/reading yourself. What’s even the point of having the long version there then?
I’m sorry but if your students use AI to write papers and you use AI to grade them zero school is happening. You are running together on a hamster wheel
Why even have a brain, any ideas, any ability to express them, any kind of communication with other people, any desire to solve problems or invent anything, any reason to learn, any use for your eyes or your heart, or any reason to teach or create

Few things kill me inside as much as environmental and humanitarian organisations’ uncritical embrace of the generative AI hype despite all that’s outlined in these slides. Unfortunately for me I encounter it all too often
As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity.

TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄
