Let's put this into context:
There were 15,149 violent crimes in Winnipeg in 2024 (StatsCan).
284 of them took place on or near transit. That's 1/168,229 journeys.
Meanwhile the average risk of being involved in a violent crime in Winnipeg in any given day was 1/20,326.

A masterful essay worth everyone’s time.
I have a feature essay for The Guardian today on the mirage of AI medicine, why care cannot be automated, and how overwhelming uptake of AI by American health capitalism threatens to undermine the very possibility of democracy.

By using the notwithstanding clause pre-emptively - which, again, they *can* but *need not* do - the UCP is not simply admitting that their laws are breaching Charter rights and bypassing the courts.

They are further admitting that their laws cannot be justified in a free and democratic society.

I called on the 🇨🇦 govt to guarantee, no-cost access to COVID-19 vaccines, including for every child under 12.

Under the Canada Health Act, every Canadian deserves equal access to care no matter where they live, or how badly their provincial gov’t ignores science, health guidelines & their citizens.

Let's be clear: three of the four books flagged by the Alberta government today as containing "inappropriate content" feature queer and trans people.

This is moral panic.

This is the same blueprint of book bans in the US.

And this is happening in Canada.

For four years, the Alberta government has buried the 2020 Medical Examiner's report on Substance Toxicity Deaths in Alberta.

I forced the report out through a freedom of information request.

Price comparisons of surgeries done at private facilities vs AHS costs, courtesy of the new documents obtained by the Globe and Mail.

Given what has been going on within the public health care system, especially the ongoing closures in rural Alberta, this data is horrifying.
