Luddites weren't anti-tech.

They were against technology being used by the capitalist class to capture wealth at the expense of the worker.

I am a Luddite, and a tech enthusiast. They're not in opposition. I want technology that makes MY life better, not that sells my life piecemeal to corps.
I hate crypto, I hate online gambling, I hate AI, I hate pay-later, I hate subscription models, I hate the gig economy, I hate ring cameras, I hate drones, I hate self checkout.

I don't want to come off as a luddite but capitalism's hold on tech sucks.

Well, after some existencial weeks, I'm back. So, let's talk about cute "innocent" AI narratives that invisibilize situations of injustice.

One (or none) like, and we call it a go on hyperscale data centers and the myth of the inmateriality of "the cloud".

Mexico is presenting a new Telecommunications and digital services law that was originally planned to be approved fast track.
After an intense backlash of civil society and other sectors, the proposal was halted and is now open to multisectorial participation.
Why was this law so bad.

Big Tech are just like oil companies and pharmaceutical corporations: reckless, undemocratic, and willing to take all (including your life) for profit

The difference is marketing; they have convinced people they're good and worrying for the future

It's time to redirect rage & justice against them

Seguimos ✊️❤️‍🔥

Trumpists are making the Signal scandal a "security problem" because an idiot sandwich gave a journalist access to a high-level chat.
It's a top moment of stupidity, and they were already high.
They're about to say encryption fails because Putin can read your chats if you show him directly

All eyes on Buenos Aires 🇦🇷 today

After days of harsh repression from the security forces to the social protests demanding a rise in pensions (including violence against old protesters), the government is trying to pass an agreement with the IMF

This message was disseminated today (image and audio)

One important policy of fascism is to establish a clear distinction between allies and enemies/the good and the bad citizens/bad-evil that the leader then has to fight (eliminate somehow).

"Terrorist" distinctions are key to doing this since they allow the use of "legitimate" public violence
If you are keeping track:

Jan 6 protestors -- not domestic terrorists

Tesla dealership protestors -- domestic terrorists
Campus pro-Palestine protestors -- domestic terrorists

And now social media companies that default their community standards to the US conception of "terrorism" ... your move.
"I will do that. I'm gonna stop them." -- Trump on declaring that Tesla protesters are domestic terrorists

Apenas empieza.

One of the very few good news stories about Trump's designations of key agencies is about Gail Slater.

Might this be a small crack for getting big tech under antitrust controls? Any thoughts?

Oxford-educated Gail Slater’s concerns about market concentration have caused disquiet on Wall Street

March 7, 2025 at 4:45 AM

This is exactly the point some of us made at Rightscon this year. Freedom of expression is close to meaningless in the actual conditions without deconcentration of the power of the market from big platforms and big tech.
Europe must enforce all the DMA antitrust and competitive measures possible.

After an absolutely amazing week in Rightscon - Taipei, I'm starting to let in all the emotional insights this gave me, and I'm a bit overwhelmed.
Completely heart-warmed but overwhelmed on what's happening and the ways we still can fight for making the Internet better and controbute to stop fascism
March 3, 2025 at 2:29 PM
Today at Rightscon, we are holding this session on the complicity of platforms and governments to censorship legitimate online expressions and access to protected users' data.

If anyone's around, jump in at Room 101D (starting 10:15).

On what -minimal, rational, not-suicidal- grounds would we leave the future of the planet to white-rich men?

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Among many hopes I hold on this shitty historical stage, one of the most pulsating ones is that at the end, when all the terror is controlled, and fascism terminated, Musk ends up in jail, with the prior confiscation of all his goods, for their use in humanitarian actions. I have a dream.
