Grammy-nominated recording artist and member of the band Sweet Cecilia, Laura Huval, performs en français here at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center. The song, "Dans la Louisiane" pays tribute to her home state.

Self-taught artist Russell Whiting said he'd take care of the 1,200 pounds of steel that he sculpted into a statue of #creole and #cajun music trailblazer Amede' Ardoin. Whiting quietly provided his TLC today at the #StLandryParish Visitor Center.

Zydeco sensation Rusty Metoyer makes his debut as leader of the Zydeco Capital Jam from 1 pm to 3 pm Saturday, Aug. 9 at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center, I-49 exit 23 in Opelousas. Metoyer, 33, and his band, Zydeco Krush, are one of the hottest acts on the zydeco circuit.

Valcour Records and Smithsonian Folkways mark Chenier’s birthday with a 7-inch single release pairing The Rolling Stones’ version of “Zydeco Son Pas Sales”. On the single, Mick Jagger sings the original Creole lyrics backed by Steve Riley on accordion. The single releases today.

In the 1990s, Broussard and Zydeco Force were TV stars, often featured on the popular program, “Zydeco Extravaganza.” Fans flocked to dancehalls to hear “Hey Madeline,” “On My Way,” “B-Flat” and other hits. Now he's on screen again in a box office hit.

Creole fiddler, accordion builder and Eunice, Louisiana native, Ed Poullard has won a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, the nation's highest honor for folk and traditional artists. Congratulations to this legend!

In 2018, a 1,500-pound steel sculpture of Ardoin was unveiled at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center. The statue was the result of the "Bring Amédé Home Project," a series of fundraisers that former poet laureate Darrell Bourque and educator Patricia Cravins held throughout the area.

Amédé Ardoin, who was born on March 11 in 1898, is known as the father of zydeco and Cajun music as we know it today. His performances with Dennis McGee are some of the first recordings of our regional style of music. His descendants continue his musical legacy and his music continues to inspire.
