Self-taught artist Russell Whiting said he'd take care of the 1,200 pounds of steel that he sculpted into a statue of #creole and #cajun music trailblazer Amede' Ardoin. Whiting quietly provided his TLC today at the #StLandryParish Visitor Center.

Zydeco sensation Rusty Metoyer makes his debut as leader of the Zydeco Capital Jam from 1 pm to 3 pm Saturday, Aug. 9 at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center, I-49 exit 23 in Opelousas. Metoyer, 33, and his band, Zydeco Krush, are one of the hottest acts on the zydeco circuit.

Amédé Ardoin, who was born on March 11 in 1898, is known as the father of zydeco and Cajun music as we know it today. His performances with Dennis McGee are some of the first recordings of our regional style of music. His descendants continue his musical legacy and his music continues to inspire.

Last night, Creole music legend Mr. Goldman Thibodeaux passed away. His life was marked with the preservation of traditional Creole LaLa music, a house-dance style from rural #StLandryParish. LaLa is the precursor to zydeco and has its own sound.

When Slim’s Y-Ki-Ki Zydeco dance hall closed in Opelousas in 2016, it represented an end of an era.

But that still begs the question: What happened to all the dance halls.

Sid Williams is remembered for being an entrepreneur. The legendary El Sid O’s Zydeco Blues Club is where other zydeco legends such as Clifton Chenier, Buckwheat Zydeco, Rockin Dopsie, and Nathan & The Zydeco Cha Cha’s and Lil Nathan & The Zydeco Big Timers played.

Legendary Creole and Zydeco accordionist and vocalist Joe Hall passed away suddenly on November 21, 2024. He and his band the Cane Cutters kept alive the French Creole musical tradition that he learned directly from creators Bois Sec Ardoin and Nolton Simien.
