God knows what kind of nonsense they're going to have in the New New Field, but their social media presence and stated ambitions are far more like corporatized American sports, full of empty pizzazz and ways to sell you more and more expensive stuff.

Strange. I think my experience is the other way around: "phenomenons" as the plural of "phenomenon." The adjective "phenomenal" is quite common and in pop culture, at least in the States, it's common to hear/see very talented people described as "a phenomenon." Whereas "phenomena" is more scientific

"Peas" is interesting, because like "rice," it's never something you eat one of.

"Criteria" is one that I think is like this where only really formal, pedantic people such as myself use the singular "criterion," most people, I think, treating it like "data" as uncountable.

Latin neuter pl. > feminine singular seems a common culprit for pl-to-sg shifts in romance languages. "arma" is another that comes to mind.
