Justice is the grey on the canvas of sky painted with black and white but it is what I fight for - evidence, accountability, and community.

Public researcher/analyst in policing, criminal-legal, community diversion, and decarcerations.

Long away from this and many social media, but have a lot of thoughts about myself recently.

For the past decade and more, I have been so fascinated by the dynamics, interactions, and relationships between people. Saw someone playing very good guitar near Reading Terminals today

Parole is a powerful release mechanism that can significantly reduce how many people are behind bars – yet across the U.S., parole boards are giving fewer people a chance.

This is not a system that values "reform" and second chances.

A powerful and compelling example of how data can be used against myths, personal biases, and political attacks. We are so easy to go with the flow but often so hard to mine out and appreciate the truth. Glad and proud for this work!
Today at the #VisionZeroPHL2025 conference a representative from a private law firm basically said the reason why there's no prosection is because prosecutorial discretion and Krasner doesn't charge what comes in… well, fortunately #DATALab had a report handy that provided data and facts

Sankeys introduced in below data story + their predecessor (bar graphs) represent some of our simplest yet most impactful work.

Showing how many reported incidents of crime are followed by an arrest? Game changer in Philly.

Was working on some tasks about a diversion program that kept me thinking back the time I was observing multiple diversion courts and inspired by those graduations. For us, it’s so easy to be overwhelmed by metrics like recidivism but overlooked the joys, improvements, and learning people have made.

This came up a lot in conversions recently. 1) As a researcher and analyst, I am with the school of pragmatism who believe our profession plays three roles: discoverers who fill the void with our curiosity, critics who express with our knowledge, and advocates who fight on the frontline of

Problematic data visualization/analysis
reason #1: mis-guided, unthorough, ill-informed or data collection, cleaning, or wrangling

reason #4: intentional data distortions for certain agendas.

We need to eliminate these harmful practices
Qualitatively trained people need to rely on things like logic and reason when reviewing math.

Another example is that Hogan paper that attributed reduction in sentences to reform prosecution without accounting for reduction in arrests. But that got published in Crim & Public Policy so fuck me aye?

Devastating. At last week's criminology meetings, James Densley, David Pyrooz & Jillian Peterson shared results of their nationally representative YouGov survey of exposure to mass shootings (w/ 4+ shot).

7% of US adults reported being present on scene at a mass shooting

2% reported being injured

Building data-driven decisions in the criminal legal system will be a long battle forward but a stance we must embrace and practice. For so long, traditions, dynamics, and beliefs overwhelm the system and are how things get done. Now data and research tell truth. I am with my office on this fight!
Hello. I’m a criminologist working in a prosecutor’s office to increase the proportion of decisions that are informed by data and research, and evaluated. We support operations, policy/practice, transparency, research, and community.
