Played by Hiroshi Fujioka and created by Sega to help market the Sega Saturn in Japan from 1997 to 1998, Segata Sanshiro made appearances in everything from print ads to TV commercials.

In this ad which also features the roguelike RPG, Baroque, Segata even plugs a music CD with his theme song!
Segata Sanshiro's oversized personality was intentional -- he was created as a parody of Sugata Sanshiro who was a character in the 1943 film, Sanshiro Sugata. His personal crusade to promote the Saturn and its games with his over-the-top personality was as much about entertainment as it was in getting eyes on the console. In addition to ads and TV, Segata Sanshiro was also featured on radio promotions, too! Because of his intentionally humorous, bombastic, and entertaining appearances, the character continues to have a cult following in Japan and even outside of the country by those who have rediscovered him. This page features an "eruption" of games for the Sega Saturn. From the top: * Winter Heat -- a sports game focusing on winter sports * Lets Make a Baseball Team -- simulation to build your own baseball team featuring cute characters * Burning Rangers -- an action adventure featuring players as futuristic firefighters * Baroque -- a roguelike RPG * Virtua Cop Special Pack -- Virtua Cop 1 and 2 with an included demo of House of the Dead. Exciting! At the bottom of the page is Segata Sanshiro himself with an important message -- his theme song is out on CD!

A two-page 1996 ad from Japan for J-Force's and Sega's strategy RPG, Dragon Force, for the Sega Saturn

Players could choose from eight rulers, each with their own story, who are drawn into conflict as a dark god's apostles fan the flames of war between the kingdoms of Legendra!
This page shows off the eight potential heroes that players can pick to start the game with, each one with their own dramatic stories to tell of why they must take up arms lending the game plenty of replayability. In the lower left is also a notice of how players might win a new Sega Saturn game! The art on this page was also used on the CD-ROM case for the game. The North America version, which came out a few months later via Working Designs, had different cover art used on its manual which was designed to fit its longer case. With a tentative ¥5,800 price tag and teasing a March 29th release, this page boasts a dramatic story in which eight heroes await players, each with their own tale to tell as they battle across the continent of Legendra. A number of screenshots show off the game in action with two battle screens, a story screen, and an administration screen! Players will not only maneuver armies around a big continent, but they'll also be responsible for managing their resources and troops.
