On the plus side: this means more cars to be drivetrain donors for cars much more interesting.

Never realised these could haul so well!

Depends what's wrong with it. A lot of my proper kit like oscilloscope is not yet sorted. And obviously I don't own any DCCs so my experience mostly would come from the analogue backwards compatibility portion of a DCC unit.

But it was very cool (because flip clocks just are) and I liked the fact the clock was lit by a gentle red neon bulb.

You definitely can't hate on the space egg design language, that's for sure. I can vouch for Prinzsound lack of quality. I had a flip clock from them for a bit, but I had to give up on it because it did not get better when serviced and was built like a wet paper bag. 😅

I was very lucky to find this one VERY cheap because it was sold as not working because the headphone jack and speaker ports don't work. But the RCA jacks do, so that was fine for me! I worked on it in a recent video.

They pack a great punch for their size! 😄 They are Kanto YU4s.

Whoops this is an Akai CR-80 not the 'D' variant. Oh for an edit button...

8 track was also responsible for getting me into 'Bread' as I own two cartridges with their music and that is not a complaint.

Take it from me: owning an Austin Montego in 2025 (or two if you're mad like me) is not a thing for the faint hearted. So much stuff is NLA and could have you waiting weeks, months or years (true story) for parts. But despite that, I still love them and they deserve saving.

Oh yes that's very much the same as the one above! C570R. That would be perfect! 🙂

I don't even think most mainstream music has got to the speaker popping and squeak noise phase. 😅

Mind you I wouldn't know! Any modern artists I like aren't "mainstream"

Oh I feel seen there. AuDHD go brr for me.😅🙈 Noted!

Please do! DMs are open. And thank you once again. 🙂

I'm in Southampton but if it's too far, I'm happy to pay for postage etc! 🙂
November 10, 2025 at 12:45 PM
I'd be very grateful of that! Thank you! I plan to use mine for as long as possible so the more the merrier! 🙂

The mechs in these are EXTREMELY sensitive to not being timed correctly during disassembly or reassembly. As per the service manual, you must follow instructions on how to make sure the timing marks are in the right spot for servicing. It's pretty wild. 😅

When I got the C570 (non R) as above, it had all the load/transport gears obliterated. I had to source more from a single DIN unit that used the same system. You can't just swap the mechs because Sony in their infinite wisdom decided the mounting holes were to be in different spots.
November 10, 2025 at 12:36 PM
If you ever think of parting with it, let me know as spares are always useful! It either ate tapes because of the belt or because the load/transport gears stripped out. Those are the two main failures I've seen in this model of cassette mech. Otherwise it's fairly reliable and performs well.

You might say well why not use the C570R if it may work better? It's because I prefer the look of the VFD on the C570. The 'R' doesn't have a VU meter or fun spinning disc graphics and that just won't do. I will keep the 'R' regardless though. It's still a handy backup if the C570 died irreparably.

I am very upset by what has happened inside that interior but I'd brave it to save an original V70. 🙂

I think I probably should recap both of them. I'm on a mission to try and recap every piece of old electronics I have with quality new components.
November 7, 2025 at 2:55 PM
This unit is a later revision from 1998. Shame they didn't think the VU meter was worth keeping. Although it did gain RDS.
