Rey is stretching after her run in Kessel Park when a glossy black Labrador puppy bounds over and drops a slobbery tennis ball at her feet. “Sorry—he wants you to throw it for him.” The most attractive man Rey has ever seen jogs after the enthusiastic pup. His dark hair is a shade or two lighter than his dog’s fur, but they’re both looking at her with big brown eyes. The puppy noses at her hand until she pets his soft, sun-warmed fur. “Oh, um, sure.” Smooth, Rey. She throws the tennis ball as hard as she can and the dog scrambles after it on big puppy paws. Which leaves her alone with Hot Dog Dad and the cute dimples that appeared as he smiles at his dog. He’s wearing slutty little shorts, too. Or maybe they’re normal shorts that are just that small on him, because he’s really tall. Wow. She shades her eyes with her hand as she looks up at him. Triumphant, the puppy starts running back toward them with the ball in his mouth. Hot Dog Dad turns the smile on her and her heart starts pounding as if she’s in the middle of her run again. “I’m Ben, by the way.” The dog skids to a halt between them, dropping the tennis ball equidistant from their feet and barking to alert them to the important task at hand. “And who’s your handsome wingman?” Rey winces as soon as the words are out of her mouth. For all she knows, there’s a ring under the leash wrapped around his left hand. But Ben’s smile widens. “That’s Kylo. His full-time job is being cute, playing fetch, and trying to chew my shoes … so I think the wingman gig might be a one-time thing.” “Oh yeah?” Rey bends over and picks up the ball, tossing it so Kylo bounds after it again. She wipes dog slobber on her shorts; Ben’s eyes definitely skim over her bare legs, brief enough to be flattering without being untoward. She returns Ben’s smile with a shy one of her own. “I’ll tell Kylo he did a good job, then.”

i'll be the light and lead you home: a reincarnation/rebirth tros fix-it fic by vedavan notable tags: inspired by buddhist principles, dreams and visions, karma and nirvana, past lives / soulmates an excerpt: "You know, some cultures believe a birthmark is from a past life, showing how that person was killed." Rey hears the words coming out of her mouth, but it's too late to stop them. She cringes. Dammit. What a batshit crazy thing to say. She must have read it somewhere once, but still. A cold shiver runs down her spine, leaving a trail of goosebumps in its wake. It’s a horrible thought, one she doesn't even wish to linger over, the thought of someone killing Ben… and besides, she doesn’t even believe in the idea of past lives. It’s complete nonsense. And yet… A strange, heavy sense of foreboding falls over her. A streak of lightning flashes across the sky, followed by another deep roll of thunder. The sky’s turned black now, but oddly enough the wind has died down, suspending the world in stillness, in a duplicitous sense of calm. Because somehow, Rey knows the storm is on its way. read if you like: TROS-fix-its which take the kind of hard right turn that lets you know you’re in the hands of a very competent driver! This fic is lyrical and vivid, lulling you into a modern world where Rey and Ben gradually become aware that their attraction to each other is far from the only thing that binds them together. Part of what is so interesting about this fic is that Vedavan allows Rey to watch herself from outside herself, to consider what she might have done differently on Kef Bir (had modern Rey been there) because the Ben she knows is the one from another universe. This lens truly unlocks a new way of thinking about what we mean when we call a piece ‘transformative work.’

The ensemble cast is clearly drawn, each with strong voices that ring true, and the time travel work - while it must look complex behind the scenes - in the hands of this author it looks totally effortless.

I know we all wanted a Force bond to open between Kylo and Rey, and DarkKnightDarkSide fulfills our wishes. So much feeling and character work is packed into a bite-sized piece, and the pain and regret they share is palpable. Of course, Kylo has to get the last word...

On the advice of his therapist (sort of), he hires a young woman for companionship, though he's braced for her to quit and run away the instant she sees his face. Instead, two lonely souls find kinship, belonging, and the opportunity to heal together. If only their arrangement didn't involve an eighty-page contract, a six-figure salary, and a potential expiration date....
