i am late to this party but i finally sat down to watch the count of monte cristo (2024) and despite some tweaks i thought it was utterly cinematic, visually lush, and despite it lasting three hours i was almost constantly leaning forward from my perch on the couch

Ben loads a biography of Senator Ivor Drake onto his datapad and goes to make a cup of caf in the galley. It’s fine. It’s all fine. It’s not like he’s reached a state of frustration in which a mere glance at Rey’s hands firmly gripping his old lightsaber hilt is enough to make him fully hard in the middle of a kriffing training session and send half a dozen lewd fantasies tumbling through his mind before he can even attempt to refocus. Just … mostly hard. Only one or two fantasies. It’s fine. He’s just taking the first sip of his freshly brewed caf when the humming of the handy six-in-one kitchen appliance unit abruptly goes silent and Rey appears on the table in the dining nook—face flushed, eyes closed, and one hand shoved down her leggings. He chokes, splutters, and spills hot caf down the front of his tunic.

It has been raging for many centuries and will rage for many more. It is a vortex, a howling scream with no end, a black hole with no bottom. It waits, and Rey approaches it, although she should be running from it. The winds whip her face. When she gets too close the sand beneath her feet quakes and slips. It is too late; she has gone too far and now there is no way back./ She thinks dreams are a waste of time. Everything important happens while you’re awake. /Half-way up a long rope in the skeleton of a warship, her face still covered by her desert wrap. It’s too hot inside the creaking hulk, and her hands are sweating. The rope slides under her grasp, despite her fabric-covered hands. She looks down, although it is against her rules, and estimates the drop is twenty-five, maybe thirty feet. Fatal, if she’s lucky. If not, it’ll still kill her, it will just take longer. There’s no work for the maimed and disfigured on Jakku. The desert would claim her, whether by hunger, thirst, or madness. Her hands slide further, losing traction inch by deadly inch. Rey swallows. She is going to fall, and there is no way back./

Rey taps out a silly little fill, enjoying the way Ben’s frowns deepens. “The bell stays." "It doesn't — Can you stop fucking drumming for once?" Rey noodles for a few seconds more, because he's not the fucking boss of the band, and the looser she plays, the angrier he gets. “Sorry, can you put on a fucking shirt?" Ben gestures expansively at his chest. "It's a fucking vest, Niima. And we already have the glockenspiel, and the three solos — " "You wanted the glockenspiel! And the choir!" " — and the bell adds an ecclesiastical flavor which conflicts with the theme of the album," he finishes, folding his arms smugly over his chest, which is barely covered by the tiny denim vest. "E — ecclesiastical flavor?" Outraged, Rey stands, gripping her drumsticks, wishing for a moment that she was the kind of person who could throw them. But this studio is expensive, and Ben breaks enough instruments for the lot of them, so instead she just jabs them in his the direct of his stupid face framed by stupid feathered hair that stupid MOJO magazine had put on the cover, leading to a lot of stupid autographs that Ben had signed after their show for a crowd of screaming and excessively buxom fans, while Rey lugged gear and stubbed her toe on Finn's bass amp. "I. Like. The. Bell." Ben's nostrils flare as he looks at her hand, then her face and then — for the shortest shimmer of a second, the same length of time that they need the bell in the second verse to make the song perfect — at her legs. Then he abruptly turns away. "I need a smoke," he calls over his shoulder, the fringe of his vest swinging. "No! You need to come back here and listen to the song with the bell, because what your stupid Berklee-ass doesn't understand is the fucking feeling of a good song —" Ben bangs open the door to the parking lot. The same lot where every morning, he pulls in late, gravel crunching, in his Dodge Challenger, the back seat of which Rey has gotten embarrassingly familiar with in the last two months, and as he yells back at her about when did knowing what made a good song become snobby, and Rey stomps after him, already preparing her response, as the studio door swings shut, Rey can hear Rose tell Finn, with the heavy sniff that must mean she’s finally lifted her head up from the mirrored coffee table that well, at least the label paid for another month here.
