Monoclonal antibodies are 50! 🎂

The story of their discovery shows how the free exchange of ideas can revolutionize molecular biology & lead to life-changing treatments. It was a kind of scientific ‘relay race’.

"it's the thing that doesn't get you papers (curation, wrangling, governance) that enables AI projects"

Data cataloguing is so important for good data management. However, it seems that data catalogue silos are inevitable. If we could agree allowed metadata formats (csv, json, ttl?), to enable metadata interoperability, could that provide some mitigation to siloing? #ISMBECCB2025 #BOSC2025

Really interesting Q&A following Amos Bairoc's #ISMBECCB2025 keynote. Seems to be an understanding that we cannot rely only on public funds for bioscience resources. IMHO it would be worth exploring micropayments for access to individual records, with 'credit' for biocuration contributions.

Wonderful #ISMBECCB2025 keynote from Amos Bairoch, giving a whistle stop tour of attitudes to #biocuration over the last 45 years.

I'll certainly be reusing the phrase "the F in #FAIRdata does not mean free"!

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.

Sad that my first post here is on the devastating news about the NIH, but it's completely in keeping with my motivation to stop using Twitter. I am hopeful that we can create a new open science and FAIR data community network here instead.

Today the Trump admin abruptly and indefinitely terminated many of the activities of the National Institutes of Health, the $50B/year collection of agencies that power the US biotech and health ecosystems. Even if these orders were lifted tomorrow, the disruption would be enormous.

Why care? 🧵
Why should the public care about the freeze on the NIH? Aside from the need for scientific pursuits to make our society better…
-For every dollar we invest in NIH research, there is a $2.5 return.
-Research dollars help fund universities that employ non-academics. (1/)
