The petition effort wasn’t suspended due to a lack of support, the BAC leader said. Rather, the group backed off now that they are confident in the state’s $500M surface water project. Also, they estimated the referendum challenge would cost them $300K. See the letter below.

BOLO … the reboot of the shops in the Jekyll Island historic district (near the Club hotel) is complete, and I made a visit Tuesday. It’s worth a visit during your next Jekyll road trip. The vibe is a little less mom and pop, but the new shop operators remain local. A story is coming soon. #jekyll

Savannah Skinny (midweek edition). Chatham Commissioner Pat Farrell is officially a U.S. House candidate. The Skidaway Republican held a launch event Tuesday night at Forest City Gun Club, drawing about 100 supporters. His platform: pro-MAGA, pro-life, pro-gun, pro-balanced budget. #gacd1

The “No Kings” protest – the counter to President Trump’s military parade in Washington – drew 2,000+ demonstrators to the Bull St. corridor Saturday. Savannah’s version featured a stage prop throne, which does look out of place here in America. #nokings

I’ll sign off today by sharing a video from my weekend camping trip to the North Carolina mountains. The clips are from Gorges State Park just east of Cashiers. Tip: After the hike, check out Whiteside Brewing in the Cashiers village.

Savannah Skinny (new week edition). Derek Dooley for U.S. Senate? The guy can’t win in Georgia as a football coach (0-for at UT, Mizzou), maybe he’ll have better luck with voters? Just so long as he doesn’t wear the Tennessee orange pants on the campaign trail. #gapol

Savannah Skinny (midweek edition). Remember Monday’s mention of the One Tybee political event on Tybee and the sign-wielding protesters? Turns out it was led by local Democratic Party organizations and targeted Rep. Buddy Carter. Check out the flyer. (and yes they need a proofer) #gapol

At the risk of letting others in on a truly enjoyable secret, you need to check out Savannah’s Saturday afternoon honky-tonk. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Saturday, Over Yonder hosts a county-western band. This last Saturday it was the crowd-pleasing Intracoastal Playboys. #overyondersav

Tybee has quietly become a political battleground in recent years that goes beyond the long-standing divide between the “sand bubbas” and the “tree huggers.” Right-leaning residents known as One Tybee held an event Sunday at Memorial Park that drew protesters.

It’s a Kessler hotel, so of course it has a theme. Instead of chrome-plated dinosaurs and geodes, the Richmond Hill spot will riff on the city’s connection to auto innovator Henry Ford and classic Ford cars, such as the Model A and the Bullitt Mustang.

Because everyone needs a banana suit in the closet … the Savannah Bananas set a Guinness world record by dressing every fan at the May 2 game in banana costumes. One of my closest friends, who likes to play dress up, was lucky enough to be there. #thesavbananas

To use the Georgia Ports Authority as a backdrop to emphasize what he considers a GOP shortcoming: President Trump’s tariffs and the potential effect on trade and consumer prices. He timed it well – a fully loaded cargo ship sailed by during his speech.

The Hyundai traffic quagmire at I-16’s Exit 143 is a little less murky now that GDOT has opened lanes that feed from the factory frontage road directly onto I-16 east. See video below and search “ajc.com” and “Hyundai traffic” for more. #hmgma

Speaking of young marine life, one of the real pleasures of living near the water is exploring it. A real treat came Sunday, when we spotted baby dolphins swimming alongside their mothers in Richardson Creek. Watch the video closely.

Because we can’t get enough Orange Crush … the trademark holder has started an application with the City of Tybee for a 2026 festival. But that doesn’t mean he’s made peace with his one-time business partner, who actually put on the beach bash (successfully) last month. #orangecrushtybee
May 2, 2025 at 11:18 AM
Fresh off success, Orange Crush faces a challenge: the trademark owner, Savannah native George Ransom Turner, want a $50K licensing fee from the festival operator, Steven Smalls. The two had a falling out in the runup to OC 2025, and there’s obviously sore feelings. #orangecrushtybee

My work trip to Atlanta this week involved flights, not car rides. That meant my first experience with the new security checkpoint at SAV. It’s much larger, which is good given growth. But 5 different queues instead 2 (1 for the coach class cattle like me and 1 for everyone else)? We’re not ATL.

Savannah Skinny (Live from the ATL edition). I’m writing from outside the Georgia Supreme Court chambers this morning. At 10 a.m., the justices will hear Sapelo Islanders’ appeal of a lower court decision to halt an election that sought to repeal a zoning decision. #sapelo

The older I get, the less intensive my sports-playing pursuits get: Disc golf, cornhole, darts and now … Irish road bowling. On Saturday morning, we rolled small cannonballs through the streets of Thunderbolt. Thanks to Jim Halley (photo) for the invite.. #irishroadbowling

We’ve written about beach erosion at Tybee. Recently, a state senator told me about issue at St. Simons Island and how they’ve built floating boardwalks across large – and growing – tidal pools. I went to see for myself on Wednesday (see below). More on this in future Skinnys. #ssi

CNN retiree Daryn Kagan, now a Townsend resident, sent over this video of a gray seal swimming off Blackbeard Island. These creatures typically don’t stray south of Connecticut. He’s the second out-of-place marine creature around these parts lately, joining melon-headed whales.

Savannah Skinny (midweek edition). Crime rates tend to ebb and flow in Savannah, and 2024 saw an ebb. The city released stats showing a 20% drop in “Part 1” crimes (violent plus property crimes) last year compared to 2023 with a 7%-plus drop in every precinct. #savpolice

Why was I motoring south? To attend the Brunswick Stewbilee, of course. Put it on your 2026 calendar now. I also learned the Georgia Legislature is considering HB 233 to designate the deliciousness as the official state stew. I vote “aye”. #brunswickstewbilee

If you want a job in Savannah and don’t have one, you aren’t trying very hard. The December unemployment rate was 2.8% while the metro area reported a new record for jobs at 208,900. Oddly, construction work was down. Is that a sign of slowing? Don’t count on it. #savannahjobs
