Seconding the questions regarding Tamiyo and the One Ring!
November 10, 2025 at 6:16 PM
genuinely even if it was just that all the non special cube packs were standard legal packs at least that meaningfully grows your collection but at present it's like yay amonkhet draft rares I will proceed to do nothing with these
October 29, 2025 at 11:35 AM
yeah it's crazy how it's priced like a standard draft format when
1. it's phantom
2. it's got power 9 variance
3. you don't even get the "special packs" until like 4 wins
4. the other packs are just like, random packs on arena???

genuinely arena cube was fun because it was low stakes and cheap
October 29, 2025 at 9:08 AM
uh yeah, I sure hope it was
October 25, 2025 at 10:39 AM
it's been a month
October 22, 2025 at 5:50 PM
yeah it probably won't be that consequential either way so I won't be that bothered if they do it either and deep down I'm ready to admit that I too would like to put ognis in more decks
October 22, 2025 at 3:43 PM
cool! ultimately I still would probably not put the hybrid cards in if it were my choice, but thanks for sharing your opinion because I feel like i know a lot more about the argument for it!
October 22, 2025 at 3:38 PM
interesting! that's compelling with the original expansion to include card text. do you think there's a value in keeping the color pie restrictive? would commander be better if it was like the arena format gladiator, where there wasn't a deckbuilding restriction on color?
October 22, 2025 at 3:25 PM
oh whoops you did sorry phone moment
October 22, 2025 at 3:22 PM
yeah that's fair and consistent with the earlier points! any thoughts on the other q? sorry if it's not clear I've been having a tough time understanding the other side of this one so I'm genuinely interested in the rationale which has been good so far!
October 22, 2025 at 3:22 PM
so why change the rules? if you can already rule zero hybrid cards, what's the need to make it official?
October 22, 2025 at 3:20 PM
I mean, I think the whole point of having the rules at all is creating a common play experience so it doesn't really matter if I don't use them, it will change that landscape in ways I am arguing against
October 22, 2025 at 3:10 PM
I'd be interested in your opinion on non-monocolored decks, like running jinnie fay in simic, or ognis the dragon's lash in izzet. Is that an overall positive? and I'd also be interested in your thoughts on what you think the point of color identity in commander is abstractly too
October 22, 2025 at 3:02 PM
I mean i don't think if they did this it would be the end of the format right, I just don't think it would be positive. Do you think adding these cards to the format like this would be greatly positive? have an outsized good impact on brewing?
October 22, 2025 at 2:52 PM
a thing I think (?) we do agree on is that there would be a point of color pie breakdown that would be bad, like a green counterspell or black artifact removal, and I guess the tension here is you place more value on the expanded options than I place against the increased color pie breaks
October 22, 2025 at 2:42 PM
I mean it's going to be tough getting anywhere if we don't agree on color pie integrity but my argument remains that the tradeoff is having more deckbuilding options in exchange for every color having an increased amount of breaks and that that tradeoff makes the game less fun
October 22, 2025 at 2:40 PM
thing is I don't really understand this argument because we agree that's a bad thing right? we don't want more color pie breaks? so why argue for putting more of them in the format? how do previous design mistakes justify this current proposed policy change?
October 22, 2025 at 2:26 PM
so my contention remains that that decision is indicative of why we shouldn't change the hybrid mana rule but I'm sensing it's not productive to talk about.
October 22, 2025 at 9:02 AM
because if there isn't I'd say it perfectly demonstrates the point that in 30 years of card design the only ""mono-white"" extra combat spell is a hybrid mana boros card.
October 22, 2025 at 8:50 AM
am I being baited or is there a mono-white extra combat step card i don't know about
October 22, 2025 at 8:49 AM
I'm against the change because I think the deckbuilding restriction is more interesting, and fundamentally regardless of what gavin said in the article there are hybrid cards that would be massively out of mono color identity. Mono-white doesn't get extra combats!
October 22, 2025 at 8:33 AM
truth nuke
October 22, 2025 at 8:26 AM
honestly this is one of the main reasons I'm against this change. One of the pillars of this format is that color identity is firm and means you know what to expect from your opponent's deck overall, and adding like 80 cards to that list including cards out of color is tough
