it's wild! similar thing is true of timpani where the pitch the drum is tuned to (and that we hear) isn't the fundamental frequency of the drumhead, but the first harmonic

it's truuuee

I get this the most with tubular bells "it makes a sound but it doesn't have a fundamental pitch it's just your brain thinking that it should have this pitch" it's not real !!!

omg this looks so interesting! I've got a big interest in theatrical percussion music where a huge component movement, Thierry de Mey's Silence Must Be has sign language!

definitely reading this <3

I'm a student, new work premiering in 5 days! It's my first time making a graphic score and I've had sooo much fun workshopping it with the ensemble :) here's a part of the score!

here's a few details that I'm especially happy with. the ties at the end are tricky!

yes definitely :P although he does have a very distinctive tone, pure and without too much vibrato, which blends so well in this music!

same goes for how I think strings should be played in Ravel's music, very slight fast vibrato, just enough to bring out a slight shimmer! I love this recording <3

aahhh i wish I could've seen! I found it so cool how at the end he just waited before acknowledging applause like "omg I need to take a breather we did it" which is SO real, the piece is huge and the end is just a perfect release of tension

YES IT WAS INCREDIBLE !
they nailed all of my favorite parts AND the percussion was outstanding :)
I was so overwhelmed by the end, the final chord was incredible

crazy that it's being relitigated, there's so much more important stuff to do 😭

also on a more individual note I appreciate the VERY GOOD (but pretty difficult) percussion writing, it's so idiomatic and perfect

post-impressionist masterpiece where we hear the influence of Messiaen married perfectly with traditional Chinese music so ridiculously good

idk about the first but second is 100% yes tbh in my books a simple grilled cheese is always a yes so if you can augment it it's so worth it :3

I love how awesome the recording and sound engineering and mixing is, I personally think that people in classical music care too much about the conductor

Throughout the timpani do this a lot, especially on held chords. The third example here is particularly cool because it shows the way the percussion instrument doing the filling in is selected to match the timbre that they're blending with

Look at these moment where the subdivision is eighth notes. The bassoon plays the melody, and the strings fill in the gaps, so there's essentially straight eighths (rhythmically speaking. Also the snare drum fills in the gaps of the bass melody, which is spooky given the contrast in articulation
