no excuse for smallcaps text that's at the same weight as the surrounding text & therefore looks weirdly thin anymore in 2025. if you're planning to have smallcaps simply use a variable font and match the weights. thanks for coming to my typography opinion

i know this is subtle, but i think it’s important: the problem with the way we’re teaching kids to read isn’t “they’re guessing the meaning of unfamiliar words from context”. this is normal, and in fact that’s how you learned the meaning of almost every word you know (1/2)
