A Michigan appeals court ruled that the city of Detroit failed to follow *its own laws* about public oversight of surveillance tech. These laws are crucial bc "Automated license plate readers, facial recognition, body-worn cameras, drones, and the Real Time Crime Center are all active in the city."
Court ruled against Detroit in surveillance tech case. It's still dangerous. | Opinion
Detroiters filed suit after the city failed to follow its own ordinance governing surveillance tech like ShotSpotter.

it's so deeply rude to answer someone's question with the output from a chatbot, or even to reference prompting the chatbot. they asked a person for a reason. if they wanted to see what output the chatbot would barf out, they could get it themselves.

I'm attending #LSA2026 online this year, AND they've let me put myself in charge of having virtual social opportunities, so if you want to socialize with me and other linguists at LSA (and I hope you do because I wanna hang out with linguists!) that's going to happen online too!
🧵Register for virtual attendance at the #LSA2026 conference! You can filter the 2026 LSA Annual Meeting Program for the Track "Hybrid" and see the 45 sessions that virtual registrants will be able to attend. www.linguisticsociety.org.

I turned to my husband and said if this man doesn’t cuss her out this is not written well and when he did I was like yeah dude cus that’s the only real interaction she would get. 😅
Loved watching Carol in #Pluribus call back the man with an individual mind in Paraguay just to counter his "hijueputa" with a Mexican Spanish "chinga tu madre, cabrón."

Chef's kiss.

The best sign language models are those that align with deaf languaging practices. When AI models are built on sign language as used by hearing interpreters or novice hearing sign language learners, this can lead to linguistic subordination to technology.

In short: The best language models are those who depend on and use those languages everyday. Don’t train AI models on new signers or hearing interpreters. Signing deaf representation is important.
