Blind (and much of mainstream media!): the AWS outage is the result of “mass layoffs, outsourced talent.”

Me: talks to the AWS engineers handling the incident. Turns out the creators of the systems impacted were in the call (not laid off!), no outsourcing etc

I attended an Uber meetup about AVs, with Danny Guo, VP of engineering, and Neil Barakat, Sr Director of engineering. It was very interesting!

I agree only partially. LLMs can be dangerous in the hands of an unexperienced person. Example: I was asking questions to Claude Sonnet 4 about this solution:

Can we, for a second, appreciate the Director of Engineering who flat out refused to produce falsified data for the founder, telling her that he doesn't think it's legal, refusing further pressuring to do so.

So Javice had to contract externally to get the fraud done.

"Piuttosto che senso di tragedia c'è ansia per la risposta assente; la possibilità di conoscere è sospesa, così come nell'ultima battuta il canto dell'orchestra si conclude sospeso sulla dominante. Qual è il senso dell'essere? Qual è il senso della musica?"

Great talk by @gergely.pragmaticengineer.com on a payment integration example in Uber from his time in Amsterdam. Highly recommend it:

Question from an intern at Uber: "If today you received an offer from a start-up vs Uber, which would you pick?"

Early-career, I'd pick the option that opens more doors later on.

If the startup is industry-wide known like OpenAI/Anthropic/Ramp: great choice.

Else I'd go w Uber

At this stage AI will provide a huge boost to balanced people that don't jump in any extreme hype / anti-hype train, and will create issues to the folks that don't see that judicious application of LLMs is the key. One of those historical moments when wisdom is an advantage.

Happy Independence Day, thank you, and godspeed to all who defend Ukraine, in and out of uniform.

One trick I learned at Uber (where this got popular)

When writing an email that is longer than ~3 paragraphs / ~12 sentences: before sending, STOP

Re-read the whole thing

Add a new line to the top starting with tl;dr

Summarize the whole thing in one sentence

You're welcome

I think part of the "coder who can't code" phenomenon can be explained with the existence of low code tools. If you use them long enough and you never wrote real code you effectively don't know programming.
I just posted this on Linked In, but @codinghorror.bsky.social talked about this many times. In 2025, it is still so relevant. In fact @antirez.bsky.social live solved this in his YouTube channel. The question remains: why so many developers cannot write code?

"Us" who, sorry? Not in my name!
Chancellor Merz has made very clear what his opinion is regarding the Israeli operation in Iran:

“This is the dirty work that Israel is doing for all of us. If not done we might have seen the terror of the Iranian regime for months and years to come - and then maybe even facing a nuclear bomb.”
