Good to hear @sharonbrennan.bsky.social @nationalvoices.bsky.social championing the crucial role that VCSE’s will play in realising the shift to community and brilliantly making the point that the 10YP care plan target must not result in tokenistic recording of patient wishes. #LabourConference2025

Thanks @nationalvoices.bsky.social

As assisted dying laws are being considered across the British Isles, our latest blog explores what information and support people need to understand the law and have conversations with healthcare professionals about assisted dying.
🚀 New to the blog!

Over 2300 people told @compassionindying.bsky.social what they need to make informed choices about assisted dying. Jemma Woodley shares their findings, and why the third sector must lead the way with clear information and supportive conversations.

This is a great example of what we do at Compassion in Dying - find practical solutions to help people navigate decisions when they're not being listened to.

We see lots of examples that show how policy is good but the gap between that and practice can be vast.
Health attorneys call us because they need urgent help.

Often they struggle to be heard when trying to refuse treatment on behalf of the person they love.

In our blog we discuss the lack of support for attorneys and what we're doing to fill this gap 👇

This is such an important point. We can't 'sort' dying just by investing in services (important though that is). We need to invest in community: its understanding, choices and agency.
There are many conversations happening now about improving dying.

They often focus on service design & resources.

What's sometimes missing is how, at the end of life, we don’t just need service change, we need culture change.

How can we foster a societal shift where people and communities own dying, not healthcare services?

We need to make sure what comes out of the 10 year plan for end of life care includes a new focus on listening to and foregrounding the wishes of people.

👀 Some thoughts from me 👇

In 2023 my lovely former colleague, Pavi Brar, & I identified a gap – there was no space for those beginning their career in the VCSE sector to meet & grow together.

This acted as the catalyst for @nationalvoices.bsky.social's Next Generation Network.

New findings from @mariecurieuk.bsky.social @nuffieldtrust.bsky.social and Health Economics Unit make for an important read.

Current health spending for people in their last year of life is disproportionately distributed towards hospital care rather than primary and community care services.
‼️🗨️ New research finds that UK public expenditure for people in the last year of life across healthcare, social care and social security is in the region of £22 billion.

Here's a breakdown of what UK governments spend on people in their final year of life. 👇

I agree with this wholeheartedly. We need both.
I have written a short piece in BMJ about why the debate about Friday's vote on the Assisted Dying Bill is smacking of medical paternalism - creating some false dichotomy between wanting better palliative care AND the right to a gentler death. We can have both, you know! www.bmj.com/content/387/...
