Switching costs... I got a bit fed up with Apple's premium pricing strategy and bought a Pixel 9a which seems more than adequate for my needs. I knew it would be painful. I can already tell this is going to be a monthslong project.

No jokes about this one. It's like laying off all of Adobe. And bigger than almost all companies. Just a massive scale.
Sources: Amazon plans to lay off ~10% of corporate staff, or ~30,000 people, its largest layoffs since 2022, to reduce costs and address pandemic overhiring (Greg Bensinger/Reuters)

Karpathy starts by saying human supervision is needed only because models aren't yet capable enough. But if you look closely at the obstacle ("I want to learn... and become better as a programmer, not just get served mountains of code that I'm told works"), it doesn't go away "when we reach AGI." +

What we die from vs. what we hear in the news.

Terrorism and homicides account for less than 1% of deaths, but for more than half of all media stories about death in the US — whether in the New York Times, the Washington Post, or Fox News.

btw what I did here was I took a data set of ChatGPT interactions collected in the wild and reversed the "assistant" and "user" tags. fine-tuned llama 8B on some of that data and gave it the ability to message you first. 😊

Renaissance: can draw people, can't draw baibes
Enlightenment: Can draw people and babies
Modernity: Why draw baby when you can draw cube?
I love how Renaissance painters are doing so well until they get to the babies and then it's like, "I have never seen a baby. Presumably they look like tiny, creepy old men?"

Super interesting thread
Not at all close. Novel-length plots are very hard. There has been a consistent, odd, overreaction on this.
note the date — 2019

this is a reply to OpenAI’s announcement of GPT-1

six years later, how close are we to novelist being an extinct profession?
