Humanity has arced away from brutality, but I've been naive about the sacrifices that arc was built on.

Growing up in Australia, I've taken freedom for granted.

More than 20 million people receive treatment for HIV through PEPFAR, the US Aid Relief Program.

This is being rolled back, and doing so will cost many lives.

@ourworldindata.org might be the best website in the world 👏
We are a nonprofit, building Our World in Data as a public good that's freely available to everyone.

We just updated the list of people who have supported our work with a donation: https://ourworldindata.org/funding

We are very grateful to each of you. Thank you so much!

@bsky.app is the best chance of toppling Twitter.

What's the best chance of toppling Facebook? Serious question

One of the most stunning @ourworldindata.org articles by the awesome @maxroser.bsky.social

ourworldindata.org/child-mortal...

Everywhere in the world, all through history, half of children died. By 1950, a quarter died. Now, 1 in 20 die.

🙏 to all those who struggled to give us this.
Mortality in the past: every second child died
The chances that a newborn survives childhood have increased from 50% to 96% globally. How do we know about the mortality of children in the past? And what can we learn from it for our future?

Dutton’s nuclear plan doesn’t address the climate crisis for about 25 years, while its claimed cost savings of 44% are based on a comparison with Labor’s plan – that produces 45% more electricity.

These are the glaring gaps and unanswered questions in the Coalition’s nuclear plan and costings.

Aussies trust the CSIRO and are sceptical about nuclear energy. I'm optimistic that they won't be duped by the Frontier costings.

In fact, this might cause the Libs to self-duttonate 🤔
History shows Peter Dutton's nuclear policy will cost a lot more than $330 billion. But journalists don't seem too interested in that, writes Bernard Keane.
Dutton's nuclear plan: An energy grid powered by endless spin
The commercial media have dutifully queued up to accept Peter Dutton's carefully planned 'taking out the rubbish' announcement on nuclear power.

I had mistakenly assumed that AI electricity consumption was a huge issue.

But, @hannahritchie.bsky.social puts it in perspective.

So is there any other reason why AI development will plateau in the near future? I can't see it.

For my 1st post, I want to shout out to the incredible @ourworldindata.org

Thank you for flipping my world view.

I thought we lived in the worst times, so I thought our institutions were wrong. But now I value how hard people have fought to lift us out of brutality and hardship.
