Still figuring things out
I think it's an out of context quote about the rational reasoning process the jury should follow. The horrific deaths would absolutely be a factor on sentence.

Anyone got an email address where we can write to nike?

Thank you for posting this 😢 I lived in the Northern Territory a long time ago, and I'm so sad about this horrific regression in such a beautiful place

Australian psephologists having a wild time right now

I appreciate the point, although I think constitutional checks like referendums with majority requirements are really important so that institutions that have existed for hundreds of years can't be torn down in one voting period. Eg, the suspension of habeus corpus

Because often people vote differently in the lower and upper house for that very reason, and even better if the upper house uses proportional representation.

Single house parliaments freak me out! So many institutions and norms aren't embedded in constitutions and can be wiped out in a flash

Sorry about the UK :) hope things ok

(I appreciate that we also have the protection of Federation 'dual citizenship', which is arguably excessive for our population size.)

The important 'conservative' role of the upper house for me is the preservation of the democratic institutions and conventions themselves (eg senate estimates). Things can go badly fast - eg QLD Newman gov, or the US right now.

This is such a good reminder. FPTP is so much simpler to understand, it's so important that we make preferential voting simple to understand too.

Maybe PR would be easy to understand, like FPTP? But I like local candidates and PV in the lower house..

Oh I see Ben already replied

Hi! This thread is about the Australian election, where we thankfully have compulsory voting attendance

I'm interested, but what is a 'party of independents'?
May 9, 2025 at 7:04 AM
Would be good practice to post this with a source I think. (I'm not suggesting it's inaccurate.) Cheers

Also the boundary redistribution is a fair chunk of that 'swing' I believe.
May 4, 2025 at 12:49 PM
Well, fair enough, but I would take not being captured by fossil fuel interests and property developers as 'visionary' enough. Can we bemoan that at least 🙂 (love your work!)

Agree with John. I hate the letter, but plenty of NGOs that I support do the same thing with scorecards etc

And HATE the tax exempt status, especially given the extent of horrific criminality

It ought to be clear when it's a paid 'opinion', the same way a news ltd editorial should be..

Forgot about this! Thanks for the reminder

It's way more than that, I reckon. The fact they don't take corporate donations, and their MPs aren't angling for cushy industry jobs, means their focus is actually on policy for ordinary people.

I'm not saying they always get policy or politics right, but they're miles ahead of the other two mobs.

Canberra is too far to stumble home from Hemmes' place..

Ah yes, it's the 'signalling' part, rather than 'acting on' for example.
