Who wore it better? The dinner menu my 4-year-old wrote vs. an official Drake album cover

Why is this playlist so bossy

"I can't see anything that I don't like about you."

"But you will! But you will. You know, you will think of things. And I'll get bored with you and feel trapped because that's what happens with me."

"Okay."

"Okay."

What an ending.

Currently watching KING KONG VS. GODZILLA (1962), one of the few Godzilla movies I've seen before. I hated it as a kid, and I was hoping I'd see it through new eyes--but this shit sucks. People waited 7 whole years to see Big G again, and this is what they got?

It's obvious GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN (1955) is a quickie cash-in, but it's still fun. Establishes the monster v. monster template the series would be known for. Hokey and charming.

At long last, I've decided to watch every single Godzilla movie. Revisited the 1954 original, still a masterpiece. Crudely made, sure, but it's a genuinely harrowing response to the Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombings. Akihiko Hirata's mournful scientist is Oppenheimer with a eyepatch.

"Death on Denial" is a meta masterpiece. They got Joe Pantoliano (PANTS!) and Gina Gershon to play horny, fucked-up versions of themselves.

The Chucky TV show is so much better than I could have expected. S1 is good, but S2 is unfettered Mancini. Bloody, campy, queer chaos. Brad Dourif, Fiona Dourif, and *especially* Jennifer motherfucking Tilly have all been great.

I'm less enamored with Marvel these days. But! Immortal Thor, Spine-Tingling Spider-Man and Uncanny Spider-Man have all had promising starts. Avengers has been great under MacKay.

Waid is writing another excellent World's Finest title, Teen Titans, with Emanuela Lupacchino. These books are just so much fun.
October 26, 2023 at 3:13 AM
Then you've got Mark Waid at the peak of his powers writing younger versions of Batman & Superman in World's Finest, with classic superhero art from Dan Mora. Waid & More are also knocking it out of the park on Shazam!, a character/title I've never cared about.

On the superhero tip, a lot of Dawn of DC has been good-to-great. Superman & Action Comics are big and bright and thrilling. The first arc of Zdarsky/Jiménez's Batman was fantastic (current one less so) & Detective is always compelling even when I'm not sure I understand V's goal

I've gotten back into comics in a big way, and I gotta say...there's some fuckin great stuff out there right now. Rare Flavours and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees both just had incredible #1's. Swan Songs is one of the most formally inventive comics I've read in years.

Oh, I forgot about

MAGNETO #2 by J.M. DeMatteis & Todd Nauck

Not as interesting as the first issue, but still some fun old school superhero melodrama written by a master of the form. Nauck's art is really solid too.

Only Marvel book I read this week was

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #33 by Zeb Wells & Patrick Gleason

Not sure we need another Last Hunt situation, but this is probably the most interesting this run has been so far. Which is a low bar, but hey, at least we've got Gleason on this arc.

FIRE & ICE: WELCOME TO SMALLVILLE #1 by Joanne Starer & Natacha Bustos

I have no idea who Fire & Ice are, but this was cute. Any book featuring Ma Kent in a prominent role gets a thumbs up from me.
