And in cities and anywhere else where those walking outnumber those driving, lights should default to pedestrian green and only change if there is a vehicle or bicycle detected as waiting.

I really don't understand why we always start with the hardest part first. If you're sensible, you do easier and less risky jobs, so by the time your building something like HS2, you've already made and learned from mistakes on projects when the stakes aren't that high.

This is awful. We need a government department that directly employs teams of engineers to progressively electrify the network. Maybe they could start with some easy bits on lines that aren't heavily used to get experience and progressively ramp it up. They'd be jobs for life.

Maybe something to take up with your GLA members?
@carolinerussell.bsky.social might be able to help. Sorry for pushing more work your way, Caroline.

It's so good. I went to the Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives to research the history of our building. The administrata of people’s and communities' lives really gives you an amazing feel of the past and why things are the way they are.

Spent this morning going through more of my possessions, working out what has survived. It’s so sad to see the damage to those things with memories attached to them — memories from my childhood, my time in the navy, university. 😢

Interesting article and a new term, “Commuting for Crime”.
Have saved it as I need to read the linked paper.
“Increasing the time it would take for someone to drive to a given place by just ten minutes reduces the probability of them committing a violent act there by 92 per cent” is intriguing.

More likely, they are putting their headquarters in Dublin, as that is both within the UK and Ireland’s Common Travel Area and the EU. It is the only place where EU and UK citizens can work together without having to jump through any immigration hurdles.

Oh, I don't know. This morning Ridge brought the receipts and showed up Philp as the odious lightweight that he is.

All morning, Philp has toured studios spouting this guff. Look at his shock when @sophyridge.bsky.social challenges him.
"No, I'm not having this. Remind me, how long have the Conservatives been in power? I haven't got my history that wrong."
High hopes for the new Sky Ridge/Frost pairing. ~AA

Maybe it'll be like the London 2021 Olympics, where after months of propaganda, we managed to persuade all the haters that they'd have a terrible time, so they all left or stayed away. London was absolutely full of lovely, happy, enthusiastic, joyful people.

Also, crime went down, but only if you look at the statistics excluding fraud and, Kemi’s favourite, computer misuse offences.

When people complain about train driver salaries and whether we can afford to have guards, I’m always thinking, “but what is that in comparison with the combined value of all the people on their train?”
