A while back, Kroger and a British company called Ocado partnered to build robot warehouses in an attempt to keep up with Amazon's ecommerce business. Fast-forward seven years and the bet is failing massively.

Store closures and food deserts. Suspended SNAP food security benefits. This crisis is not an accident. It’s the result of the rise of the billionaire class. When billionaires and politicians fail working people, our union steps up.

In their budget bill, Trump and the Republicans slashed federal funding for SNAP and WIC, and the government shutdown chaos has only added to the pain and uncertainty. The impacts of these choices ripple across our stores, our families, and our neighbors — and they make everyone worse off.

Asking those with more resources to contribute their fair share to society isn’t just good for the workers we represent and the customers we serve every day — it’s good for business.

Our union mourns the sudden loss UFCW 324 President Andrea Zinder. Andrea stood shoulder-to-shoulder with UFCW 3000 in the fight against the Kroger–Albertsons merger, in countless organizing campaigns, and in building worker power. Solidarity forever.✊

Fred Meyer workers spoke, and Everett listened. Last night, the council condemned Kroger for closing the Casino Road store, putting the city on record: Our communities come before Wall Street greed.

Kroger is closing Fred Meyer stores in our region for one reason: corporate greed. They're abandoning working class communities in search of higher profits. Tune into the Everett City Council meeting at 6:30 pm tonight to hear the real story from workers.

Thanks to the support of our loyal customers, union grocery workers won good wage increases and first-in-the-nation contract language to address the staffing crisis in stores. All of that will help reduce long lines and keep shelves stocked. buff.ly/2o4s5Uo

As the pandemic closed businesses around the world, grocery stores stayed open. Given the risk to grocery store workers, our unions fought hard for hazard pay needed to survive. UFCW Locals 21 and 1439 (who had not yet merged to form UFCW 3000) demanded hazard pay in city halls across the region.
