A while back, Kroger and a British company called Ocado partnered to build robot warehouses in an attempt to keep up with Amazon's ecommerce business. Fast-forward seven years and the bet is failing massively.

The company said on Tuesday it would shutter the centers it operates with British online supermarket and technology group Ocado in Wisconsin, Maryland, and Florida in January, while monitoring the rest. "The pandemic bump didn't hold, and shoppers moved back to stores quickly, so the economics of running dedicated ecommerce facilities may no longer make sense," said eMarketer analyst Suzy Davidkhanian.

A lawful permanent U.S. resident for nearly 20 years, he had tried to get treatment inside the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. Instead, he suffered until his symptoms were so severe that he was finally sent to St. Joseph Medical Center. There, he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and a bone infection, requiring the amputation of part of his foot. Charlie King, a UFCW Local 3000 union representative, joined the rally to share hospital workers’ solidarity with Kuya G, and to call attention to the ways patients and healthcare workers are harmed by the presence at the hospital of armed guards working for ICE. UFCW Local 3000 represents medical techs at St. Joseph. “Our members believe hospitals are for healing, not detention,” said King. “Kuya G is fighting for his life at St. Joseph Medical Center,” said Ker of Malaya Movement Tacoma, which helped plan the rally. “Kuya G has shared that he feels hopeless and in pain, both physically and emotionally. In moments like this, when the system tries to break his spirit, we must demand accountability on every level.” Tanggol Migrante is asking supporters to sign their petition in support of Kuya G, and if able, to donate to his legal fund.

When paychecks arrived at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, Nurse Nicole Geffrey noticed something wasn’t right. She could tell that nurses at the top of the pay scale hadn’t received the longevity bonuses they had negotiated into the new contract earlier this year.

Text: Moreover, a more truthful account from the CEOs would include the financial benefits they’ll gain from the city revenues they help create. A city with more affordable housing means a better, more efficient workforce for these companies to draw from. A city with higher food security means more customers to keep those sales volumes high. A city with more rental assistance and shelters keeps more people in housing, reducing encampments that businesses often blame on lower foot traffic.

BY Makr Hamstra, Wednesday September 19, 2025" “Kroger’s closures put profit over people, plain and simple,” said Faye Guenther, president of UFCW 3000. “Unfortunately, due to a steady rise in theft and a challenging regulatory environment that adds significant costs, we can no longer make these stores financially viable,” a Fred Meyer spokesperson told Supermarket News. “Despite doubling our safety and security investment over the past years, these challenges remain.” Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin, for example, this week called for a resolution rebuking Kroger for its decision to close the store there. “The closure will result in the loss of jobs and significantly impact food and retail access in Everett’s most diverse and economically challenged communities,” Franklin’s proposal states. “This resolution expresses the City Council’s solidarity with affected workers and residents, calls on Kroger to reconsider its decision and urges reinvestment in employees and the neighborhood.” Meanwhile, a class-action labor lawsuit against Fred Meyer alleging the chain violated Washington state law by prohibiting hourly workers from holding second jobs was moved to a federal court this week. The suit was determined to potentially include several thousand workers in multiple states, who could receive a total of at least $81.3 million.
