This week, we're spreading the word about our fight to reclaim our co-op from administrators who want to turn our stores into cookie-cutter chains. PCC workers are demanding an end to outsourcing the deli, good wages for sustainable staffing so we can deliver the level of service customers deserve.

But both practices have crept into retail operations, leading lawmakers in Washington state to take action this legislative session. House Bill 2481, sponsored by Rep. Mary Fosse, D-Everett, and a host of other House Democrats, aims to rein them in. Surge pricing refers to retailers changing the price of a product based on demand. Surveillance pricing, on the other hand, involves companies collecting consumer data to build individual profiles and using AI to set personalized prices depending on the consumer.  Imagine you’re at the grocery store with a friend. You buy the same item, but companies have collected data about you and your shopping habits, so you end up paying more than your friend. The difference may not be huge, but it is noticeable, and it can add up.

What a way to close out 2025! More than 150 workers at the Lumen Field and Renton Landing Pro Shops just voted to join our union. These hard workers are also passionate sports fans themselves, and they're pumped to cheer on their favorite teams as they bargain their first union contract.

UFCW 3000's member-led Political Action Advisory Committee (PAAC) met to discuss how to build pro-worker people power heading into the next election. Our PAAC interviews and evaluates every candidate who seeks our union's endorsement. Then we work to put them in office and hold them accountable!

As heavy rains and flooding threaten our region, UFCW 3000’s Mt. Vernon office will remain open as a hub for members, staff, and community from 9 am to 5 pm Wednesday.

Get out of traffic and get into our union hall! The new Des Moines light rail station opening on Dec 6 will put our offices just steps away from fast, reliable transit, making it simpler for members in the Puget Sound region to join meetings, trainings, and events.

We’re also excited to join the other 450 Confluence Health Hospital workers who are already members of UFCW 3000.”

Grocery clerks and cashiers are at the heart of the food affordability crisis. Many of their customers can’t afford enough good food or are trading down to lower quality or more processed items. And as essential workers, clerks and cashiers are typically paid far below living wages, especially as food inflation has outpaced real wage growth. Like their customers, essential grocery workers are making difficult choices to feed their families and communities, and many are hungry for the holidays. Cynthia Hernandez is Customer Service Clerk at Ralphs in South Los Angeles. “The emotional toll is visible and real. I have seen customers become visibly distressed and even break down in tears at the checkout when they realize they cannot afford the food they need.” “When the SNAP benefits stopped, it was an immediate shock to my budget. As a single mother with three children, that assistance is a critical part of my ability to buy groceries each month,” Cynthia Hernandez explained. This isn’t just affecting individuals but entire families and communities. Cynthia is also supporting her 65-year-old mother, who is a SNAP recipient and also had her benefits cut. When Cynthia’s benefits were restored, they were stretched to cover two households. A study of Kroger employees in 2022 revealed that over 75% faced food insecurity. While many employees have fought for and won wage gains, costs of living increases eclipsed their victories.

A while back, Kroger and a British company called Ocado partnered to build robot warehouses in an attempt to keep up with Amazon's ecommerce business. Fast-forward seven years and the bet is failing massively.

A lawful permanent U.S. resident for nearly 20 years, he had tried to get treatment inside the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. Instead, he suffered until his symptoms were so severe that he was finally sent to St. Joseph Medical Center. There, he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and a bone infection, requiring the amputation of part of his foot. Charlie King, a UFCW Local 3000 union representative, joined the rally to share hospital workers’ solidarity with Kuya G, and to call attention to the ways patients and healthcare workers are harmed by the presence at the hospital of armed guards working for ICE. UFCW Local 3000 represents medical techs at St. Joseph. “Our members believe hospitals are for healing, not detention,” said King. “Kuya G is fighting for his life at St. Joseph Medical Center,” said Ker of Malaya Movement Tacoma, which helped plan the rally. “Kuya G has shared that he feels hopeless and in pain, both physically and emotionally. In moments like this, when the system tries to break his spirit, we must demand accountability on every level.” Tanggol Migrante is asking supporters to sign their petition in support of Kuya G, and if able, to donate to his legal fund.

When paychecks arrived at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, Nurse Nicole Geffrey noticed something wasn’t right. She could tell that nurses at the top of the pay scale hadn’t received the longevity bonuses they had negotiated into the new contract earlier this year.
