A new study by @ucl-targ.bsky.social shows that between 2017–2024, motives for reducing alcohol consumption among risky drinkers in England shifted, with cost and social factors nearly doubling. Health concerns stayed the most common motive. lnkd.in/ehE2k3wQ

Nice coverage of @ucl-targ.bsky.social's Alcohol Toolkit Study in this article.. www.alcoholinengland.info/graphs/month...

I would (and did!) say though that any population declines we are seeing are being driven by declining consumption among younger people..

Smoking kills.

It’s a message most people will have heard. But just how much does smoking affect life expectancy?

In a new editorial, we estimate that on average, each cigarette steals approximately 20 minutes of life.

The Smoking Toolkit Study suggests non-daily smoking has increased since 2020.

Over this period, estimates of smoking prevalence have diverged from official Annual Population Survey (APS) estimates.

Take home: APS may be underestimating true smoking prevalence in England.

Prof Jamie Brown outlines potential reasons for the discrepancy between estimates of smoking prevalence in the APS and Smoking Toolkit Study.

Changes in APS question wording may mean it’s missing a chunk of non-daily smoking - which has become more common.

On @lbc.co.uk today discussing smoking and vaping. Once more, the line “we don’t know what nicotine is doing to our young people and their brains”. But we do have evidence, young people have been smoking - and using nicotine this way - for generations. This is a common misperception and fear.
