Nothing says the countdown to Christmas is on quite like….a nicotine pouch advent calendar? 🫤

There's been an explosion in the marketing of these products, often in ways child-appealing ways. Marketing restrictions of pouches is definitely on our Xmas list.

Yesterday's budget highlights how our tax system can be used to shape the health of the nation:
👍Extension of SDIL - incentivises business to make products healthier.
👍Increase in tobacco duty and keeping alcohol duty in line with inflation - increases quit attempts & reduces use.

In a budget where it seems like the Chancellor was looking anywhere and everywhere for revenue raisers, the Government missed a trick by not listening to ASH's call for a polluter pays levy on tobacco manufacturers that could raise up to £5bn over 5 years.

While there's some welcome measures in the budget, it's also a missed opportunity for further action that would have benefited both health and public finances.

We are pleased to support this position from @fphuk.bsky.social. The tobacco industry remains incredibly profitable, while producing and marketing a product that will kill more than half of long-term smokers.
NEW 🔔 : FPH supports a ‘polluter pays’ levy scheme for tobacco products in the UK.

This would cap wholesale tobacco prices whilst increasing tax on tobacco or applying a new health levy, limiting industry profits & generating revenue to achieve a smokefree future.
