I used to work in a country where they asked your marital status on every bit of paperwork imaginable (eg buying a bus ticket). It seemed vestigial b/c so many people skipped getting legally married it would have been useless even if they had a good reason to ask. Why do so many firms ask your sex?

You might want to check out Connie Willis’s time travel farce To Say Nothing of the Dog which recapitulates some of the Three Men in a Boat journey. Willis is great at pacing and dialogue, and 20 years after we read it my spouse can still crack me up with “Mrs Marmalade.”

I showed my 6-year old the photo of Ruby Bridges walking into school all dressed up and brave, and then we realized she’s younger than my kids’ grandparents. It wasn’t very long ago at all.

Is Bovino still under a federal judge’s order to show up personally in court in Chicago to account for excessive use of force? Would federal marshals bring him back from NC if Judge Ellis ordered it?

The article mentions the collapse of the Tiwanaku polity. This coincided with a major loss of food production infrastructure (canals, raised field systems),a retreat of the surviving population to ramshackle waterless hill forts, and a layer of ash from burned buildings even in outlying areas.

Even if you accept the claim that people in an area were better off before being incorporated into a state, it doesn’t follow that they’d be better off after state collapse.

You could share valuable Amtrak experiences with your kid like getting dropped off 6 hours late in the snow by the side of the tracks and calling your ride from the pay phone at the biker bar. Ok at least we have phones now but you could still probably ruin trains for him!

Does Sandusky even have a station? They used to just drop you off on the side of the tracks with a little step stool next to the abandoned station building. For $3000 there should be a station.

I talked to someone who gave a tour of a rural health clinic to a Republican congressman, giving him an opportunity to talk to (mostly white) families on Medicaid. He asked repeatedly if they were all paid actors because they just did not match his idea of what Medicaid recipients look like.

When our state legislature was taking testimony on Medicaid work requirements a few years ago, most of the support was employers coming to say that “no one wants to work anymore” (for what we want to pay) and that work requirements would be a good way to force workers to settle for worse jobs.
