Ma'nene is a ritual in North Toraja, South Sulawesi, where people exhume the bodies of their loved ones from burial chambers, clean them, change their clothes, even serve their favorite food. It roots in ancient belief Aluk Todolo, "the Way of the Ancestors". 1/4 🧵

Aaaand they’ve just covered it up.

Which is just another layer of irony…

…given that this is state action against protest about state action against protest.

Flurry of news about the Indonesian cabinet reshuffle - Sri Mulyani’s departure the biggest scalp and front page of the Jakarta Post. Not sure how many finance ministers can cause the stock market to fall on their resignation.

Today's task is to try and find a Shell petrol station which still has VPower fuel available. There is apparently a shortage which doesn't seem to affect the state owned Pertamina stations. Probably caused in part by the Pertamina watering down and reimport petrol scandal and import quotas.

The Jakarta Post mentions some of the symbolism of pink and green in the Indonesian protests: www.thejakartapost.com/indonesia/20...

Pink for the hijab worn by a now iconic protester and green for the Gojek driver Affan Kurniawan’s jacket - colours cropping up as part of online activism.

The White House's memes about imprisonment, deportation, and death by alligator are designed to radicalize and desensitize.

“What you have is this desire to get people to buy into the fun of sadism,” says Jason Stanley, an author who’s leaving the US because of “concerns over fascism.”
The official voice of the US government Is cruel, gross, and weird. What is that doing to us?

I'm one of the Builders in Residence for Hugo and Stefan's Building LLM Applications course. I've been hacking around with an idea of a 4X (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate) game played by agents. Fun weekend project.

One unintentional life hack about living in Indonesia is many of my favourite podcasts are ad-free. This is probably because networks like Megaphone or Acast probably do IP address targeting, and I only remember ads exist when accidentally downloading these podcasts using my UK sim on roaming.

There has been a lot of discussion about AI safety, and even something of a backlash with models like Mistral removing moderation mechanisms. I wonder more about ontological bias, especially in the current political moment. 1/2

This has tormented me for about a year after I foolishly lost my Duolingo streak at 360 days. Now back at 328 it feels a bit like a Rocky montage… *hums Eye of the Tiger*

I've been thinking a lot lately about AI tools which help English as an Additional Language speakers learn English. Through my consulting work with an Indonesian ed-tech I built a cross platform React Native project and supporting infra for outside-of-the-classroom family activities app. #EduSky
