Our colleagues at the U of Lethbridge need your support. Join their letter writing campaign for a fair deal. ULFA members are paid an average of 15-20% less than academic staff at comparative institutions, and have some of the worst health benefits in the industry. www.ulfa.ca/take-action/

The Board-ordered lockout that began Aug 20 has finally ended: classes start on Tues. I’m excited; but I hope that someone is not now trying to concoct a report on the ‘success’ of this innovative tactic in the ‘rebalancing of markets and mission’. By what KPI would they benchmark it? 🧵 (1/7)

1000 faculty hit the picket lines tomorrow, 930 am, lockout by @dalhousieu.bsky.social. A first for CDN research intensive universities. A reckless move by the Board - jeopardizing the fall term, ruining relations with faculty for years to come. Join us on the picket lines to #keepdalstrong!

...2/2 This WILL STILL impact students.. & admin will blame faculty for it. It also aims to take away on-campus student support for their profs. Bluntly, it's a dick move by Dal, dismissive of their faculty and students. Faculty working conditions are student learning conditions. #Solidarity!

I am disgusted by the locking out of @dalfaculty.bsky.social by the administration @dalhousie.bsky.social. This is clearly an attempt to bully the faculty with appearing to not impact the students. Rubbish. This is when most faculty shift to intensive preparations for the fall term... 1/2

“Democracy needs universities, not credential factories or degree mills. It needs places where disagreement is taught, not denied; where complexity is invited, not simplified or avoided; and where reasoning is cultivated, not squeezed; where one is broadly and comprehensively educated.”
Higher education has long been a public good, a vital tool for the betterment of society. Now it is being used to serve the market above all else, writes Barry Stephenson.

The Board is threatening to lock Faculty out, halt their research, alienate our partners, and disrupt the Fall term, all in an effort to decimate the very faculty who help us “punch above our weight” on the global stage.

How will that help our “global reputation” one wonders? #KeepDalStrong
