I'm a scicomms person not a scientist, but my experience working with researchers is that many pubs want to do their own. I think they consider many researchers' idea of 'plain' language is nowhere near plain enough!

Great to see this kind of question getting asked. Are you asking patients and public as well? It's a good way of checking for groupthink and the same old suspects popping up time after time.

The whole 'send out a zillion news releases' model is broken, I agree. But meeting client needs isn't going to change, because if they don't, they go bust. Clients are often woefully naive or paranoid about journalism and need educating too, or don't understand it's not part of their marketing dept.

Sat on both sides of that desk & feel your pain, but what journalists often miss is that a good story is secondary for PRs. It has to hit the client's needs first, and PRs have to meld the two sides. So from your expertise and experience what are 3 would be three short bullets to help PRs?
