Being a queer trans Iranian is another level of hell. You have to fight tooth and nail just to gain basic necessities and rights that people take for granted and never give a second thought. Society hates you. Family hates you. The government persecutes you. And the world bombs you and gates you out

In marketing not all sources of "awareness" are created equally. There's a difference between seeing for the first time a game through a review by your favorite reviewer, and seeing it because their account followed you on social media. The social capital of the source of awareness matters.

It happened too many times this year in one form or another, online and IRL. And yeah if we get philosophical enough all relationships are transactional on some level. But to the degree that it is where if someone or some group don't see an immediate benefit in you, you're cut off, is disheartening
Perhaps the most important and cruelest lesson I learned this year is how quickly groups will drop you and how difficult it is to be accepted into one when people don't see a benefit being friends with you and nice to you. Far too many social connections are transactional masked with friendliness.

the desire for cultural commentary hasn't gone away, it just got shifted onto a platform that everyone's stuck into watching out of boredom and addiction, the information may or may not be at all researched or accurate, and the actual commentary is usually secondary to the personality delivering it
How do we reconcile the deluge of "the Humanities are dead!" think pieces with what appears to be a massive appetite for rich, sophisticated interpretations of culture & history? What are the affordances/constraints of video essays as a form of public scholarship? As a form of knowledge production?

2024 is almost over and I find myself kinda getting back into pro wrestling. Haven't watched a full episode yet, but watch clips off reddit and youtube, and it's all because of CM Punk. I know wrestling attracts a lot of bad people with bad politics, but Punk is so visibly different.

I honestly feel if "the immigrants" all left from the Western countries that hate them so much, the entire Western world would collapse within a month. Case in point: Germany is panicking Syrians might want to go home because they're the largest group of foreign healthcare workers in the country.

MachineGames only knows how to create games with their whole chest, I don't even know how to describe it. Their games know exactly what they are, and they're designed to aggressively do that thing. They make games that are confident, borderline angry experiences and I love the whole crew as a studio

I've said it before, but Tehran is like the real Cyberpunk dystopia out there. Everyone is alienated, lots of people crammed into too little space, rent is so high and pay is so low that even a lot of specialized white collar workers can't afford a single bedroom apartment, smog fills the sky...
