Rarely… but they do try to. The Reds are lighter and seem to be able to jinx away to the tips of trees. Mature trees with slightly overlapping branches tips is where they are safe (they can escape as Pine Marten are too heavy).
But Greys got caught.

On open ground both would not stand a chance.

… has been helpful for the #RedSquirrels as not a Grey squirrel left here now; Pine Martens sure are effective, if vicious.

Sorry being so graphic at this time of the morning… but here is an example of the Pine Marten scat. Must have been eating yew berries.

Sorry.

Great Tits for #FirstBirdOfMyDay Hannah… a Jay has opened a hole in the Peanut feeder so “The Trade Union” are increasingly vocal as I approach the bird table in the morning.
I think a Pine Martin has started turning up because of the fallen peanuts… which won’t help the Trade Union’s mood.

A Robin barking at me like a Regimental Sergeant Major to get on with filling the Bird Feeders was the #FirstBirdOfMyDay .

Stunning structures & colours Pirjo. 💚

“Cronk Cronk … Aarrrghh Aarrgh… Clonk … Cronk Cronk”
That’s a wonderful and mystical #FirstBirdOfMyDay Hannah.

They definitely have a complex language - wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to understand what they are saying to each other? (…and about us!)

My head hurts trying to comprehend this (the age, the magnification, the detail, etc) but credit to you all because this is utterly fascinating and the images are stunning & beautiful.

Sky! (Yes, with some cloud and retreating mist)
November 7, 2025 at 7:54 AM
I can see sky, rather than cloud & mizzle or rain, for the first time in quite a while. Bird table, hedge line and yew trees covered with #birds.

Lovely to see Bramblings, Linnets, Siskins, Fieldfares and #FirstBirdOfMyDay Redwings joining the resident crews, as skeins of Greylag passed over.

Hi hi - I’m watching on YouTube (well done, enjoyed the film and 🙏)

Quick Q - we have a number of beavers here at home on the Forth, on the “Carse of Stirling”, the floodplain. It has an 18 ft height range … is that a fair place for them to live as their efforts to dam keep on being washed away?
November 6, 2025 at 7:57 PM
Fair enough … we can but try.

Thank you and keep well. Tom.

How many foods are this delicious (best meat?) and also so good for you? (high protein, minerals etc).

Easy to cook:
high temp & rest, or,
low & slow, or
add to Beef Mince -> eg “Beefison Burgers”.

Just don’t understand why it is not more popular - but perhaps “Bambi” doesn’t help.

Had a proper “Little & Large” moment for #FirstBirdOfMyDay and we all know that the mighty wren is loud🤣

* “Mullet” … because an old Aussie mate & cricket team mate used to describe his (filthy) #Mullet haircut as, “Business at the front, party at the back”, and much I think seems to describe this hedge pretty well.

Birds & “Beasties” seem to really like the structure & format.

“Apocalypse now” ? … loosely based on the 1899 novella, “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad.

Credit to them - well done @bcciwomen.bsky.social 👏

The sheets were tugging so I was a tad later than usual for the “Green before Screen” walk with the Pup hence the large number of Rooks, Jackdaws, Crows, Hoodies & Ravens were already up & about, but Great Tits are always a good way to start #FirstBirdOfMyDay, annoyed that I was late for bird table
November 2, 2025 at 8:39 AM
Snap with the Jackdaws for #FirstBirdOfMyDay … frost on the ground after a clear night followed by morning fog. Bird feeding table busy.
Skeins of Pinkfoot & Greylag #Geese passing over; I think (& hope) with the cold they will keep to the stubbles here rather than inhaling our Winter Wheat. #Birds

Chinese Silver Grass or “Zebra” Grass Laura?

It is properly tough & hardy, can take pretty much any soil and doesn’t mind being shaded.
Birds like the seeds and leaves break down to help build soil.

[Apparently in some parts of the 🇺🇸 it is now viewed as invasive.]
