God bless Vince Gilligan

“Gilligan is critical of AI in filmmaking, calling it ‘the world’s most expensive and energy-intensive plagiarism machine’. ‘I have not used ChatGPT, because […] no one has held a shotgun to my head and made me do it.’”

Ahem. Just a reminder that there’s an *actual* decentralised network that you can be part of. No drama, just chill vibes. I recommend my home instance: indieweb.social.

Probably best not to support corporate social media give the way the world is going, eh?
Indieweb.Social
INDIEWEB.SOCIAL is an instance focused on the evolution of #Openweb, #Indieweb, #Fediverse, #Mastodon, #Humanetech and #Calm technologies.

People don’t seem to get that I will literally work manual labor jobs to avoid using AI and React. And I do. 🥲

I had been reluctant to try Hollow Knight for some reason, but WOW what a good game! Way cooler than it seems from the screenshots and trailers.

Dolly Parton has sent my daughter a new book every month for years as she does for thousands of children. She help fund the development of the Covid vaccine. She’s not a billionaire. I think as non wealthy people it’s hard to even imagine how much billionaires *could* be doing with their money.

Zed is finally getting to a place where I can start to get off of VS Code. It’s ostensibly an AI-focused IDE, but it has a reassuring top-level setting available:

"disable_ai": true

Just a reminder, if you want a non-social place to track your reading, I keep improving stacks.piep.works. It's my current obsession.

I read this article today and quite liked it

www.drewlyton.com/story/the-fu...

An analogy came to mind when reading it: if the cloud is feudalism, self hosted is sustenance farming.
The Future is NOT Self-Hosted
In a world where corporations have detached buying from owning, one man attempts to do something radical: build his own cloud.

My current opinion on LLMs in software dev is that 99% of their impact on productivity comes from:

1. Helping devs manage shit they should absolutely not have been doing
2. Regurgitating code whose quality doesn’t matter because their entire organisation is divorced from the end-user value

If I had a calculator that gave me the wrong answer even 1% of the time I’d be extremely skeptical of using that calculator. But it’s good enough for most people and we’re just going to live with the consequences.
