In a 2017 Reddit AMA, MacFarlane noted that he chose the Orville name while writing the pilot episode and reading a biography of the Wright brothers, in which "there seemed to be some depiction of Orville as the 'beta' brother. Seemed like a good fit for our midlevel craft."

Unironically, The Orville is one of the best Star Trek inspired series out there. The authenticity it exudes was actually a surprise.

The Orville ist sehr empfehlenswert! Kommt erst als Star Trek Satire daher, greift dann aber tiefer in die Ethik-Kiste, als Star Trek es bisher gewagt hat.

(it was the Orville. it was well-meaning but often painful to begin with and got steadily better and better until it was really good Star Trek. huge respect to that show)
