Today is Universal Access to Information Day. But instead of being open towards its citizens, the European Commission has actually made it harder for outsiders to follow how it makes decisions.

It's time for the EU to stop hiding behind rules that block transparency.

In an ideal world, corruption investigators could enter a suspect’s name into a database and instantly see all the assets connected to that individual.

Today is #InternationalDayofDemocracy. But in the EU and its neighbourhood, governments are reversing democratic values alarmingly.

At home, the EU must use all tools in its power to safeguard the rule of law.

And it must make democracy an essential condition for EU membership—without compromise.

Independent media must be strengthened. But if the EU wants to be taken seriously about stopping corruption, it must promote integrity within its own institutions.

The Commission should start with upholding transparency on the inside, especially in times of war and climate breakdown.
Europe’s independence is about protecting our freedoms. And free press is the backbone of democracy.

We will launch a Media Resilience Programme to support journalism and media literacy.

And keep backing independent and local media - because corruption happens in the dark.
