This hits deep today.
As I watch people and organizations who have the power to resist fold, I keep thinking of the reflection from Helen Keller that "avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold."
While morally odious, cowardly, and textbook examples of getting divided-and-ruled... the deals being struck by unis and law firms don't seem on face particularly onerous. Is that the key here? Law elites and university presidents are like, "meh," even as they push the door open wider to autocracy?

Yes. The situation at NIH is worse than the public realizes.
The #NIH is on track to be effectively ended as a funder of evidence-based research within a year.
That is not an exaggeration. The firings and consolidation announced today will create a new, MUCH worse NIH.

The first and most important thing to know about last night's Exec order is that it's intended to break current law and allow people throughout the federal gov look at yr tax returns. Beyond that it's intended to compel states to turn over all their data to the fed govt.

Okay, I finished my numbers for the Republican CR.
Relative to FY2024 levels, defense would get a $6 billion increase while non-defense would get a $7 billion cut.
And under the hood, it would cut health, education, and labor and shift money to DHS.

For those happy about the destruction of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, did you learn nothing after the 2008 housing crash? This agency was put into place to stop stuff like that from happening again.
