I do miss Spinoza-conferencing though. Maybe I’ll make it back to some soon.

The ideal length for a conference is, imho, a day and a half. Anything more than that, and no matter how enthusiastic, committed, well-intentioned etc., it just starts to become a slog.

I was curious, so I looked up the RGB values for Sweet Dreams (847): (214, 231, 226). So, it’s very close, but in terms of pigment (but perhaps not qualia), it is very slightly more greenish than blueish. But I admit that doesn’t really resolve it.

I guess charitably it just refers to them coming out of the ground, as if birthed… but still. 🤨

I like that he thinks cicadas have intercourse with the ground. That’s up there with some of the whackier things Aristotle thought about the natural world.

Ah! Nice. It’s been a while since I ran Linux, but this might work: www.baeldung.com/linux/contro...

If it’s a PC you might be able to help it somewhat by switching to Low Power mode (and/or “battery saver” mode even if it’s plugged in), and manually tell it to spin the fans on high (Speedfan might work: www.almico.com/sfdownload.php). Not sure what the equivalent is for Mac.

Thanks for sharing so much publicly, Helen. And for being such a positive force in philosophy and the world more generally. I will always appreciate your generosity and good will.

As with everything that has happened since the first go round with these people, it seems that pointing out the illegality and corruption doesn’t lead to any (serious) repercussions. TBH, I find that more dumbfounding than the fact that they’re doing these things so openly.

Bart: Oh, how can they imprison kids in school on a beautiful day like this?
Lisa: They're not imprisoning us, Bart. They're...
[a gray bus labeled "Springfield Prison" pulls up]
Bart: Prison bus, Otto?
Otto: The regular school bus broke down, so take a seat before I blow your heads off!

I predict: badly. It’s going to end badly.

When parents don’t read to their children—especially older texts—it stands to reason that they have no cultural touchstone for these stories other than popular mass-media. Honestly, it’s starting to happen even for cultural figures from only a few generations ago, like The Beatles.

The direct consequences of measles infections are bad enough, but I think it is equally frightening that measles appears to induce immune amnesia, effectively resetting your immunity to other things you’ve been vaccinated for (polio, etc): www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Long-term measles-induced immunomodulation increases overall childhood infectious disease mortality
Preventing measles prevents immune memory damage and nonspecifically safeguards against many childhood infections.

Good luck! Yeast is challenging but fun. Challah is the first thing I ever got to work right. Moved on to bagels soon after. Sourdough stumps me, though.
March 1, 2025 at 8:49 PM
Did you test the yeast before using it? You can put it in a small amount of warm water (part or all of the amount in the recipe) with a bit of sugar or honey first and wait to see if it bubbles up and is alive. Maybe you did this. But if not, here’s a nice guide: www.allrecipes.com/article/how-...
How to Proof Yeast
Before you bake with yeast, you have to make sure it's alive and well. That simple but essential step is called "proofing." We'll show you how to proof yeast.

Yeah that’s a plausible explanation. I’d have to test a bunch of different formulations. But I ran out of image generation tokens for today.

It seems to be peculiar to ChatGPT in its current iteration. I tried a similar prompt on Copilot and got this:
