Sick of being advertised weapons on your DC commute?

So is Ben Freeman, who wrote his Responsible Statecraft column today about the ads from Anduril, L3Harris, and other Pentagon contractors that have blanketed our buses & metro system.

Love this gesture from Penzeys Spices, who appear to have sent boxes of spices to DC customer addresses to be put out for sharing in the community. If anyone in Ward 5 is looking for some Resist! spices, hit me up.

And finally, on the wisdom of seeking U.S. military dominance of the world:

"... the future of dominance, that's not an option. It's not on the menu, all right... we're going to have to choose something else."

Secondly, on China:

"Everyone wants to talk about what their plan is to beat China. Anytime anyone says that, you got to ask the question: 'What is your plan to peacefully coexist with China?'"

3 moments stuck out to me from today's Quincy Institute webinar on "A New Approach to America's Role in the World" with Rep. Adam Smith.

On Dem foreign policy: "I think...we are not where we need to be in terms of having a left side of the political spectrum foreign policy...we need to reset."

The Pentagon must be held to the same high standards as the rest of the government. Its budget dwarfs the budgets of the agencies under the most scrutiny (USAID, anyone?) and, as Rep. McGovern points out, it has been held to much lower standards.

This isn't good for fiscal or national security.

New resource: This "Think Tank Funding Tracker" has transparency ratings for the top 50 U.S. foreign policy think tanks.

You can use it to explore think tank funding from foreign gov'ts, MIC companies, and the U.S. gov't since 2019.

If Dems want to stop being perceived as the war party, they need to stop acting like the war party. To regain credibility they MUST push for peace and diplomacy.

Militarism has been the bipartisan consensus. This can’t continue.

In the future, the Dems need to oppose Trump admin policies that don’t align (escalation towards war with Iran, counterproductive sanctions) and also work with the GOP where possible (peace in Ukraine?)

Our militarized FP is expensive, and Americans don't love that so many of their tax dollars are going to the Pentagon or for weapons to Ukraine/Israel. They’re asking why that $$ wasn’t spent on healthcare/education/their community.

Foreign policy mattered in this election.

U.S. complicity in Gaza most directly impacted the Harris campaign’s momentum - but foreign policy also contributed to issues that Trump campaigned on: inflated food prices/cost of living and immigration.

🧵Thread:

Between Biden’s failed Israel policy & Harris’ embrace of hawkish rhetoric, it’s clear that the left needs new foreign policy leadership.

After a disastrous election, is it time for the Dems to rebuild the party for peace?

The answer: YES!
