Hiking, backpacking, and swimming in alpine lakes.
WA PCT 2025 - Day 1 - Hot as hell, and all uphill.

Woke up early to drive the 150 miles to the PCT where it crosses the OR and WA border. This is where I would start. I have 6 weeks, spread out over the summer and early fall, to hike as much as possible of the 546 miles of the Washington PCT.

Day 3 - Journey through the Himalayas.

We would fly into Lukla, the most dangerous airport in the world (look it up), and then trek to our first tea house of the trip in Phakding.

This is also where we learned the first rule of Nepalese travel... Hurry up and wait, then hurry again.

Day 1/2 - Journey to Nepal

I just traveled halfway around the world to visit and hike the Himalayas. It was a 17-day trek of epic proportion with my fabulous friends in #CSFBS.

The first part of the journey included a 14-hour flight to Doha, 8-hour layover, and a 5-hour flight to Kathmandu.

I have my 2025 WA PCT thru hiker permit for this year.

I've wanted to hike this section in particular since the 90s when I did it with my parents.

I've been working toward this for 3 years. Afraid it would disappear before I would get the chance.

Little did I know just how soon that would be.
“Thirteen projects had been planned for 2025, among them fixing up what he calls the gnarliest section of the 2,650-mile-long Pacific Crest Trail. The work would have required Forest Service workers to helicopter into the Mica Lake area to clear trails by hand…”

When I'm stressed. Go for a hike.
When I'm angry. Go for a hike.
When I'm sad and tired. Go for a hike.
When I'm in a dystopian alternate reality....

Say it with me. "Go for a hike!"

Last year, we visited Enchanted Valley in Olympic National Park. This jewel of the PNW is teaming with wildlife. @altnps.bsky.social does a fantastic job of protecting this beautiful resource. We appreciate all you do. Please know you are seen, you are valued, you are a source of truth in the chaos.

Last year, I hiked the Chelan Lakeshore Trail in Okanogan-Wenatchee Forest just before the pioneer fire. We met up with @altusfs.bsky.social doing the hard task of keeping our forest and trails clear. Later they were at the front fighting fires. Love our Wildland Rangers and Firefighters!

As I plan for and agonize about going on an upcoming trip, I thought I would look back at an amazing trip from last summer.

Agonize, you ask? With planes falling from the sky, democracy on fire, and my children's future swinging in the wind...

Maybe I should take them backpacking. Permanently.

Snow Day!

Who says it's just for kids?

Drove 2 hours, met up with a couple of friends, hiked 7.5 miles and 3,400'. (12km and 1036m)

Had a fantastic time!

Sanity restored.

We need to call out the blatant lie being pushed by the Trump administration—that Elon’s staffers have only “read-only” access. It has been confirmed across departments that they have “administrative” access to computer systems.

Funny story: As a teen, I was backpacking the WA PCT.

I was hiking ahead up switchbacks. Nowhere to go but up, and I found a fork.

I yelled down to my Mom. "I found a FORK ON the trail."

She freaks out and yells, "Stay there, wait for us, don't take the fork!"

A few short months ago, I ran into an alpine bunny...

Did you know pika are related to rabbits? Now you do.

I always have an amazing trip when I see a bunny.

Whitney, I didn't get to summit this time. I'll be back!

Silver Dollars.

My Grandpa Haugen used to tell me about a time in Klamath Falls, Oregon.

The town was fed up with the military base, Kingsly Field. They were tired of the Airforce people running around, causing issues and disrupting their quiet lives. They wanted them out!
