Love how vibrant the Ballarat Little Aths community is, by far the most diverse activity the kids are involved with.
Kids from all backgrounds playing together, cheering each other on.
Great to see.

Jarring to have just finished Hugh White's QE Hard New World and the follow up expert responses to it that all support his central thesis that AU needs to strike an independent path from the US.
Then to open the news and see Albo doubling down with Aust as a staging base for the US military.

Our old girl Esmeralda, still going strong at 10 years, even managing an egg a week still.
Lost her two sisters this winter though so don't think she'll be with us much longer.
Barnevelders are a great breed.

Good morning Lal Lal windfarm (in the distance, past the canola fields).
Wind and solar smashed records on Saturday hitting a new peak of 79.8% electricity share on the NEM - without huge curtailment they would have produced 113% of demand.
Huge!

Reflection 2: Latte sippers have conquered the nation.
No matter where you go in this huge country, there is excellent coffee. A shared national passion.
And, there's a thriving coffee roasting scene throughout the regions. A few of the bags we picked up along the way.

And as we approach home, the temp drops back to single digits and the rain falls on us for the first time in a couple of months. 😂
Will post some broader reflections soon, but overall an excellent trip. Feel pretty lucky and privileged.

Last stop Echuca and we are back on Dja Dja Wurrung Country.
Jumpers firmly back on, sleeping bags zipped up again - oh yeah, feel that Victorian spring seeping into the bones.
Echuca often feels far away, but it is really very close.
Such a tight concentration of varied and good spots in Vic.

Good to see the transmission towers for Project Energy Connect going up.
A massive project constructing 900km of new line, its behind schedule, but is absolutely critical for getting new renewable power into the grid so we can completely phase out fossil generators.

Should watch the movie with the kids, reckon they would love it now.
So good to see the original photos from the build.
The Dish is now called Murriyang, which is the skyworld where a prominent creates spirit in Wiradjuri Dreaming lives.

Back to Victoria via Parkes (Wiradjuri Country) to see The Dish.
I love this place, it's such a great facility and every time we've visited there are refreshed and new displays.
Science in action.

Very sad though to read the pleading all through the park for local farmers to please protect any remaining scar or carved trees.
Apparently landholders have actively destroyed them on the belief they could lead to land claims.
All known trees in the park were destroyed in the huge fires of 2013.

Heaps of wildlife around, with the best being seeing an emu dad and his five chicks.
Too many kangaroos though and the bush is full of goats.
This park really needs dingos re-established to eliminate the goats and control the roos.
Alas, Parks have got 1080 baits all over to kill dingos here.

The Warrumbungle National Park was declared Australia's first "Dark Sky Park" with a focus on minimising artificial light to preserve the night sky.
We were lucky to join the monthly ranger tour where they get out the big telescopes and provide a tour of the sky.
Starlink satellites everywhere.

And onto the final major destination of the trip for a few, the Warrumbungles, for a few nights camping and hiking.
First time I've been back here since I was a kid when it was thick with Patterson's curse, metres high.
Still a lot seeding out but far better than it was then.

Then down via Walgett, site of one of the Freedom Rides in 1965 to protest the racism and segregation in the town.
Not sure if you'll be able to read it on these images, but the vile levels of racist violence perpetrated here into the 60s is disgusting to read about.
Racism rotting the nation.

Also loved Stanley the big emu the community has built out of VWs and scrap steel. Favourite big thing so far.
Also found this little guy at the library entrance and learned the story of Yarraan, the Gamilaraay dreaming story about the creation of the Southern Cross.

An unexpected highlight though was the town thermal pool.
Free to access and open 24/7, it is filled with warm 40C Artesian ground water piped from ~1 km below ground.
Lovely atmosphere, especially in the cool of the evening.

And over the border to NSW at last and to Lightning Ridge (Yuwaalaraay and Gamilaraay country) for opal hunting.
Gotta say, it exceeded my expectations and reminded me a bit of Brokem Hill with the strong local artistic community.
Had a blast collecting opal pieces from the free fossicking sites.

The big drive south gets under way properly now.
Next stop, St George (Mandandanyi country) - the town which gave Barnaby Joyce to the nation, via Roma home of the Big Rig and big bottle trees.
The irony of Roma's Big Rig is the town is at huge risk of becoming uninsurable due to climate impacts.
