Yeah it's not great. One of the producers came out and more or less defended the ep, boiling down all of the correct criticism to "we don't think that showing an image of one stitch as an example of another undermines the message of the video", and "we didn't expect knitters to see this" lol

Maybe don't participate in deeply dismissive, misleading, poorly researched, and misogynist videos masquerading as "science"

Hank hosted a Sci Show segment about knitting that spent most of its runtime dismissing the millennia-long history of fiber arts, calling them boring lady hobbies that were figured out entirely by accident, and were only useful when science men decided to pay attention to them

I appreciate your input! I also find that I tend to specify if I'm going out with a specific purpose, such as with your pharmacy example

I appreciate your response! And while I'd like to say this is for something important or monetary in some fashion, in reality I have ADHD and this question is what my brain decided to hyperfocus on today. I've always loved little differences like this, to me they're absolutely fascinating

Appreciate the response, neighbor from the north! I'm noticing from some other non-USian folks that "supermarket" is pretty uncommon with them as well. I wonder if it's more a specific country/regional term than I previously thought 🤔

That 100% makes sense. I asked a friend who grew up in a pretty rural area with few options, so it was always just "the store" for them as well. Thank you for your insight!

I feel like I only get specific when I have a very narrow, 1 stop trip in mind. Like going to Lowes for hardware needs, for example. Otherwise, me saying "I'm going to the grocery store later" could mean multiple places, but the overall trip is for groceries

Never heard of the "party store" thing until today, love that haha. Appreciate the response!

Interesting! I didn't expect to get a response from across the pond, I appreciate the insight!

As a professor of English, do you say "supermarket" or "grocery store" when talking generally about the retail place where the food lives? I'm working on something and trying to get as many answers to this as I can

This is not to dissuade people from using audiobooks or bashing the medium. But when we're living in a time where newspapers have to be published at a 4th grade level so the average reader can understand it, we need to be encouraging actual reading as much as possible.

You think the same guy whose party has been gleefully talking about slashing Social Security and Medicare by billions of dollars is going to do fuck all about raising wages?

The problem is that scientific writing requires complex language to explain complex topics, but most newspapers are published at a 4th grade reading level. That's because 57% of US adults read below a 6th grade level, and 41% can't read above a 4th grade level and are functionally illiterate

Hot take: The real reason Super Soakers don't exist now is because cop robots aren't saltwater proof and the Super Soaker CPS 2000 Mk 1 with its 3.1L capacity and 25x pressure nozzle would make short work of one from up to 50 feet away

My favorite part is how the NYPD is trying to frame the guy to the public as a crazed killer like Berkowitz in order to scare folks, when it's clear as day this was a targeted assassination.
