Roman Mosaic in the Bardo museum in Tunisia which showcases shifting extinction baselines. Orpheus plays his lyre to a bunch of animals that all occurred in the Roman empire (and all except the tiger in Tunisia) when it was made, yet are now all extinct (or only recently reintroduced):

Absolutely! Just coming back from Egypt now - saw these 3000 year-old ducks yesterday. Very pretty, but ultimately just artistic drawings at the end of the day.....

New paper out, excellently led by Ferran Sayol, showcasing the AVOTREX database. This database summarized information on all 610 bird species known to have gone extinct in the last 130,000 years (including geographical range data, traits, and phylogenetic positioning). tinyurl.com/muznycc9
